Post-Graduate Year 1 Residency Program Our PGY1 residency is a one-year clinical and administrative program designed to meet the three main requirements outlined by the American Society of Health System Pharmacists including acute patient care, practice foundation skills and practice management. In our post-graduate year one (PGY1) Pharmacy Residency, you’ll benefit from our unique training program that takes advantage of the wide variety of rotations and learning experiences within both acute and ambulatory care settings. Everything you learn about pharmacy practice will be based on our patient-centered Mission of providing safe, compassionate care. This residency program is designed to provide a broad overview of institutional pharmacy practice and is tailored to meet the needs of each resident. Graduates will be prepared to provide advanced pharmaceutical care services to a wide variety of patients in diverse practice settings. You Get the Resources of One of Washington’s Leading Medical Centers Kadlec Regional Medical Center is an acute-care, general and referral center offering a full range of adult/pediatric/neonatal medical, surgical and critical care services. Our Pharmacy Department provides centralized and decentralized order entry with automated unit dose and IV admixture distribution. Working under collaborative drug therapy agreements, residents are responsible for initiating and adjusting medication therapy for a variety of patient populations. As a member of the healthcare team, residents work closely with providers, nurses and other healthcare disciplines. Residents are involved in interdisciplinary team rounds, education, committee work and stewardship activities, which will help develop practice leadership skills. Choose a Residency Project or Area of Research Residents will complete an investigation of a particular aspect of pharmacy practice, which will span the length of their residency. This quality improvement project will require IRB acceptance/exclusion, will be presented upon at ASHP midyear, and a spring residency conference. Staffing Experience Each resident is required to staff every other weekend. Staffing will begin the week of August 10. If the resident does not acquire a Washington pharmacist license by August 10th, their staffing will be delayed until they are licensed and previously scheduled staffing hours will need to be made up once licensed. As a resident, you’ll have teaching opportunities throughout the curriculum, including: didactic lectures, small group teaching in Pharmaceutical Care Laboratory and assistance with precepting pharmacy students on rotations. In the broadest sense, our affiliation encourages an academically motivated environment and our residents can obtain adjunct faculty status as Clinical Instructors. Length of rotations Non-longitudinal rotations will be five to six weeks in length. The length may vary between five and six weeks due to scheduling for conferences, meetings, trainings, and to fit all rotations within the 52-week residency program. The medication safety and drug information, residency project, staffing/operational and pharmacy administration are longitudinal rotations, and will be year-long experiences. In addition to the required orientation rotation, there are five required and three elective rotations. Applicant Requirements Prior to the start of the program, the resident shall be a graduate of a college of pharmacy accredited by the American Council of Pharmaceutical Education (ACPE). Ideally the resident will be licensed by the start of the residency, but if not possible should be licensed as a pharmacist in Washington State no later than August 10. Residents not licensed as a pharmacist at the beginning of the residency must be licensed as a pharmacy intern in the state of Washington until the pharmacy license is valid. The applicant shall meet all the requirements for employment at KRMC and meet the professional requirements of the Department of Pharmacy. Strong residency candidates will possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, professionalism and leadership, and demonstrate a commitment to the provision of pharmaceutical care.
