About Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center
The Clement J. Zablocki Veterans Affairs Medical Center is located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Milwaukee is approximately 90 miles north of Chicago, Illinois and 80 miles east of Madison, Wisconsin. The Greater Milwaukee area is home to about 1.5 million residents. Downtown Milwaukee is located along Lake Michigan, which is the setting for many summer festivals, museums, and restaurants. You can always find something to do in Milwaukee! Sports fans have plenty to choose from -- the Milwaukee Brewers baseball, Milwaukee Bucks basketball, Milwaukee Admirals – American Hockey League, Marquette Golden Eagles Division One college basketball, Milwaukee Wave soccer, and more. NFL football is an afternoon drive away as the Green Bay Packers dominate the fall sports season. Summers in Milwaukee are especially enjoyable due to the multiple festivals on the waterfront and free concerts in parks throughout the city. Milwaukee County has an extensive park system that includes over 140 parks and parkways totaling nearly 15,000 acres.
The Milwaukee VA is a teaching institution with residents, interns, and medical students from the Medical College of Wisconsin. The Milwaukee VA provides education... activities for 1,000 students annually. In addition, the Milwaukee facility has a major research program. The VA Medical Center is also an established teaching center for the University of Wisconsin - Madison School of Pharmacy, Concordia University, the Medical College of Wisconsin Pharmacy School and other colleges of pharmacy, providing a wide variety of learning experiences for pharmacy students.
The Milwaukee VA is part of VA Integrated Services Network 12 (VISN 12), which includes facilities in Iron Mountain, MI; Tomah and Madison, WI, and North Chicago, Hines, and Chicago, Illinois. The Medical Center delivers primary, secondary, and tertiary medical care and provides over 816,000 visits annually through an extensive outpatient program. Average daily census is comprised of 166 acute care beds in addition to 113 extended care beds. The Milwaukee VA also has over 356 domiciliary beds which house veterans enrolled in programs such as Substance Abuse Rehabilitation, Psychiatric Rehabilitation and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder care. The Medical Center participates in a partnership with the Wisconsin Department of Veteran Affairs (WDVA), the Center for Veterans Issues, Ltd., and the Social Development Commission, to operate Vets Place Central, a 72-bed transitional housing program. Milwaukee also has community based outpatient clinics in Appleton, Cleveland, Green Bay and Union Grove, Wisconsin. These programs serve a veteran population of roughly 250,000 in southeastern and east central Wisconsin.
Special programs include cardiac surgery, comprehensive cancer care including radiation therapy, a Spinal Cord Injury Unit, interventional radiology, and, in long term care, a Geriatric Evaluation and Management (GEM) service as well as a Palliative Care program. The Medical Center is the VA Great Lakes Health Care System's northern tier hub for both imaging, and pathology/laboratory medicine.
