Program Overview

Stanford Health Care (SHC) proudly offers an American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) accredited PGY-1 Pharmacy Practice Residency with an emphasis in either acute care, ambulatory care, transitions of care, or specialty pharmacy. The program offers a comprehensive clinical experience in diverse areas of pharmacy practice balanced with longitudinal research and committee responsibilities. Residents learn from dedicated precptors and leaders within their respective field to develop as contributing practitioners within the pharmacy profession. 

 

Program Objectives

Upon completion of the residency program, the resident will:

  1. Provide optimal clinical and operational pharmaceutical care to patients in multiple practice settings
  2. Function as an effective member of health care teams
  3. Educate health care professionals, students, patients, and the community
  4. Ensure appropriate medication use and safety
  5. Enhance written and verbal communication skills
  6. Demonstrate time management and problem-solving skills
  7. Become a leader within the profession

 

Program Structure

The PGY-1 Pharmacy Practice Residency is accredited by the American Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP). The program follows the ASHP Residency Learning System (RLS) and its goals and learning objectives are consistent with standards developed by ASHP.

Our approach to residency training offers practical experiences in diverse, multidisciplinary environments spanning the continuum of pharmaceutical care.

  • Transitions of Care (for Ambulatory, Transitions of Care, and Specialty residents only)
  • Ambulatory Care (10 weeks for Ambulatory residents)
    • Oral Anticoagulation Clinic
    • Stanford Primary Care Clinics
    • Transplant Diabetes Clinic
  • Practice Management
  • Staffing

  • Pain Clinic
  • Pulmonary Clinic
  • Pediatrics (through Lucille Packard Children’s Hospital)
  • Psychiatry
  • Senior Care Clinic*
  • Specialty Pharmacy*
  • Surgical ICU

*Primarily for ambulatory care focus resident
† Additional ambulatory care opportunities may be available at partnering institutions.

Longitudinal Experiences

  • Weekly ambulatory clinic rotation
  • Longitudinal research project
  • Medication use evaluation
  • Policy/procedure update
  • Drug information inquiries
  • Medication education program management
  • Precepting and coordination of pharmacy students
  • Teaching certificate program (optional)
  • Presentations including CE, BCPS, in-services, etc.
  • Clinical pharmacy staffing
  • Committee participation
  • Conference attendance

Eligibility

  • Completion of Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an ACPE-accredited school or college of pharmacy
  • Participate in an on-site interview at Stanford Health Care
  • Obtain licensure to practice pharmacy in the state of California before October 1st

The Department of Pharmacy provides integrated, cost-effective pharmaceutical services to Stanford Health Care (SHC). These patient-focused services include medication delivery, therapeutic recommendations, and promotion of optimal drug therapy. To advance its mission, the department provides a supportive environment for professional training and development. The Department of Pharmacy participates in the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Residency program. Three ASHP-accredited residency training programs are offered including a PGY-1 pharmacy practice residency and two specialty PGY-2 residencies in Critical Care and Oncology/Hematology. Three additional PGY-2 programs are applying for pre-candidate status through ASHP to include Infectious Disease, Emergency Medicine, and Health Services Administration and Leadership. Stanford pharmacists also precept pharmacy students on clerkship rotations
