PGY1 Pharmacy residents will progress through a series of customized rotational and longitudinal learning experiences during the 12-month period. We offer a mix of required and elective learning experiences in multiple areas. Block rotations are one month long, which allows for 10 focused rotations (seven required and three elective).

Medical or Surgical Critical Care
Ambulatory Care - Family Medicine Clinic
Transition/Research (December each year)
Elective Learning Experiences
Cardiovascular Surgery Critical Care
Neonatal Intensive Care
Drug Information/Medication Safety-focused rotation
Additional Critical Care (Medical ICU, Surgical ICU)
Other specific elective experiences may be available, depending on the resident(s) interests
Teaching certificate program (optional)
*Residents will have a service commitment of one evening per week and every third weekend.

We participate in the PhORCAS (Pharmacy Online Residency Centralized Application Service) residency application process. PhORCAS is the result of a partnership between the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) and Liaison International. It also incorporates registration with the National Matching Service (NMS). All candidates must be graduates of an Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) accredited degree program (or be in the process of pursuing accreditation) or have a Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Equivalency Committee (FPGEC) certificate from the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP). Applicants should also be eligible for Virginia licensure. Additionally, interested PGY2 candidates shall have completed (or currently be completing) and ASHP-accredited PGY1 residency.
Applications for our residency programs require submission of the following information through PhORCAS:
Letter of Intent
This letter must be personalized to Carilion and include answers to the following two questions.
Why do you want to complete this residency (PGY1, PGY2, etc.)?
Why do you want to complete your residency training at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital?
A minimum of three (3) references submitted through PhORCAS (for PGY2 program applicants, we recommend one of the three references be from current residency program director)
Completed applications are due by December 31.
