Residency Special Features: Pharmacy Residency Program Post Graduate Year 1 (PGY-1) at the VA Caribbean Healthcare System is a collaborative program between the School of Pharmacy University of Puerto Rico (UPR) and the VA Caribbean Healthcare System.The program builds on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.)education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training. It complies with the ASHP-PGY1 standards and emphasizes the following competency areas: patient care, advancing practice and improving patient care, leadership and management, and teaching, education and dissemination of knowledge.Teaching and Learning is an elective for those residents interested in participating in the Teaching and Learning Curriculum and obtaining the academic certificate.Residents participate in acute and ambulatory patient care experiences, which include internal medicine, intensive care unit, antimicrobial stewardship program, mental health, cardiology, oncology, anticoagulation management program, home-based primary care, pain and palliative care, extended-care services, and patient-aligned care teams (PACT). Other experiences include practice management, investigational drug service, teaching rotation at the School of Pharmacy UPR, and precepting students in their introductory and advance practicums. An academic certificate program with the University of Puerto Rico School of Pharmacy is also offered to interested residents in the Teaching and Learning Curriculum as a parallel optional opportunity.

Special Requirements for Acceptance: Participation in the NMS Resident Matching Program and PhORCAS (Pharmacy Online Residency Centralized Application Service). Interview required. Pharm.D. degree required, U. S. citizenship, college transcript, Curriculum Vitae, three letters of recommendation, licensure eligibility or licensure to practice pharmacy in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia, essay expressing interest and reason for pursuing a residency, fully bilingual (Spanish and English).
