Residency Showcase Program Listings

Valley Children’s Hospital offers a one-year, postgraduate residency program in pharmacy practice, with an emphasis in pediatrics. This PGY-1 pharmacy residency program builds on the Doctor of Pharmacy education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions.  Graduates of the program will also be eligible for board certification and PGY-2 pharmacy residency training.

Program Structure

A 12-month schedule of rotations will be created for residents to rank prior to the start of the residency to meet the required ASHP competencies of the program. As the resident acquires additional knowledge and learning experiences, their specific goals may change (these will be addressed quarterly in each resident’s Development Plans). Residents may request to change or trade scheduled rotations.

Examination & Licensure

It is required that residents take the California Pharmacy Licensure Exams prior to the start of the residency. Exceptions made on a case by case basis. Residents must have a valid California Intern License if not pharmacist licensed prior to the start of the program. All residents must successfully pass both pharmacy licensing exams (NAPLEX and California Jurisprudence) within the first three months of the residency year or disciplinary action will be taken that may include failure to receive residency certificate and termination from employment.

Residency Certificate

A criteria for receiving the residency certificate at the end of the 12 month term, is that the resident ACHIEVES 80% of the required objectives set by ASHP. Presentations and Teaching

• Residents will rotate to present a 10-15 minute powerpoint presentation at monthly Pharmacy Staff and/or Technician meetings. The topic will depend on the current residents’ rotations and the current operational events each month.
• Residents will be assigned to prepare a single 1 hour didactic lecture to present to pharmacy students from local schools of pharmacy APPE classes. This will be scheduled in the Fall/Winter.
• Residents will be assigned Journal Club presentations, Patient Case presentations, and Drug Consults regularly throughout the year. The schedule coincides with the start of pharmacy student rotations.
• Residents will take an active role in precepting pharmacy students on rotation at Valley Children's Hospital. Once trained, residents will review pediatric core disease states with pharmacy students on rotations.

Application Requirements

Final deadline for submission of all online application materials is Tuesday, January 3, 2023. If any non-electronic documents are requested by the RPD, they must also be received in the Pharmacy Department by January 3, 2023. Candidates must complete both standard application requirements in PhORCAS and meet/submit the program supplemental requirements listed below:

• Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an ACPE accredited school of pharmacy; or a M.S. or B.S. in Pharmacy with equivalent clinical experience
• Be eligible for pharmacy licensure in the state of California
• Apply for ASHP Residency Matching Program (our match #190313)
• Three professional recommendations in PhORCAS (completion of standard PhORCAS reference form) - Example: Two references from preceptors who can speak of your clinical abilities and one from your pharmacy employer. If you have completed a pediatric rotation, it is recommended that one reference should be from the pediatric preceptor
• Your letter of intent uploaded to PhORCAS should answer two questions:
• 1) Why you want to complete a pediatric residency; and
• 2) Why you want to complete a residency at Valley Children's Hospital
• Your transcripts must include the most recent rotation grades (or have your site preceptor email those final grades to pharmacy@valleychildrens.org by January 3, 2023).

It is recommended that candidates complete a pediatric rotation prior to application submission or on site interview. If candidates are unable to obtain a pediatric rotation, candidates should document pediatric experiences in other areas of PhORCAS and on their Curriculum Vitae.
