The VA Tennessee Valley Healthcare System (TVHS) is an integrated healthcare organization comprised of two campuses in Nashville and Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and over 13 community-based outpatient clinics located throughout middle Tennessee and southern Kentucky. The system is affiliated with Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and Meharry Medical College as well as schools of pharmacy at the University of Tennessee, Samford University, Belmont University, and Lipscomb University. Between the two medical center campuses, there is an extensive range of medical and clinical pharmacy services that allows for the optimal training and teaching environment.
The ASHP-accredited Postgraduate Year One (PGY1) Pharmacy Residency at the VA TVHS began in 1991 and has greatly expanded since that time. Residents rotate through experiences at the two campuses during the year and will develop the knowledge and skills required to become a competent clinical practitioner. Having more than 70 Clinical Pharmacy Specialists on staff to precept, residents get to experience many different practice areas acute, ambulatory, and specialty practice settings.
With preceptors who are board-certified in their practice area, actively involved in national pharmacy organizations, and/or working to contribute to medical literature through publications/research, residents get the extraordinary ability to work with clinical pharmacy specialists practicing at the top of their respective fields and see how our pharmacy services positively influence the health of the veterans we care for. In addition to the PGY1 pharmacy residency positions, VA TVHS offers ambulatory care, psychiatry, and pain management, and cardiology PGY-2 pharmacy residencies.

TVHS offers a wide array of experiences, ranging from ambulatory care to critical care. With over 80 clinical pharmacy specialists working at the top of their license with a scope of practice in a variety of practice settings, the resident will have ample opportunities to work with preceptors who are practicing at the top of their field.
We offer a very well-rounded PGY1 year to expose residents to multiple pharmacy practice specialties. After completing an introductory month in pharmacy operations, PGY1 pharmacy residents will complete core rotations in primary care, acute medicine, critical care, acute psychiatry, and pain management. With dozens of preceptors and opportunities, the hardest decision is which elective opportunities to choose. PGY1 resident training schedules are customized on a quarterly basis with the resident, considering the resident’s goals, interests, and previous experiences. All residents will have at least one elective rotation prior to early commitment deadlines and ASHP Midyear to allow residents to solidify potential PGY2 interest. Throughout the year, residents will also partake in longitudinal experiences that facilitate growth and development as a... future clinical practitioner. Residents will also participate in publications/research with well-respected preceptors in their specialty practice fields.
