AdventHealth Apopka is a 120-bed acute care hospital that opened in early 2018 which will grow into a 200-bed hospital. It is located in Apopka, Florida just outside of Orlando, and is part of the Central Florida Division. Current services include emergency, critical care, interventional radiology, sports medicine, general surgery and cardiology (i.e. PCI).

The PGY1 pharmacy residency program was established in 2020. Our inaugural class graduated in June 2021. Our program’s purpose is to build on the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication related care of patients with a wide range of conditions. Additionally, these pharmacists will be eligible for board certification and postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.

Following the initial 6-week orientation and training, learning experiences are 5-week duration each. Pharmacy Practice Advancement is emphasized through the completion of multiple longitudinal activities which include drug class reviews, drug formulary monographs, clinical treatment guidelines, medication use evaluations, one-hour ACPE-accredited continuing education presentation, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification and pharmacy code blue coverage, research, and a final research report suitable for publication and presentation at a professional meeting.
To build practice leadership skills, participation will also be expected in the Formulary committee, Clinical Practice Standards, Medication Safety and campus meetings. Additional responsibilities will include performance-improvement projects and student, employee, and resident teaching.
