Our mission is to nurture and grow resident pharmacists to become pharmacotherapy experts who provide compassionate clinical care, innovative, and effective education, rigorous, relevant research, and progressive leadership in the fields of pain management, palliative care, and hospice. The resident pharmacist will be immersed with interprofessional teams (including hospice and palliative medicine as well as pain fellows) throughout the year and graduate with the experience to be an integral member of an interprofessional team engaged in pain management, palliative care, or hospice.
The majority of the Post Graduate Year 2 (PGY2) Palliative Care and Pain Management residency rotations take place at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics (UIHC). UIHC and University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital are part of the state's only academic medical center and the region's largest healthcare center. In addition to pain management and palliative care, pharmacists at UIHC provide a wide variety of patient care, education, and research activities in a range of relevant pharmacy specialties, including but not limited to ambulatory care, burn and trauma, oncology, transplant, critical care, emergency medicine, psychiatry, and geriatrics.
The resident pharmacist will benefit from being embedded within the interdisciplinary UIHC palliative care team, training with physician fellows in hospice and palliative medicine. The resident pharmacist will have teaching responsibilities in the UI College of Pharmacy Doctor of Pharmacy Palliative Care Certificate Program.
