Located just north of Atlanta, Wellstar Kennestone Hospital (WKH) is a 633-bed community teaching facility and the largest hospital in Wellstar Health System’s network. The Level II Trauma Center features a new, state-of-the-art emergency department; a comprehensive stroke center; and a certified comprehensive cardiac center. The PGY1 pharmacy residency program, started in 2008, offers three traditional resident positions and (as of this year) its first nontraditional resident position. In July 2022, WKH added the first-ever-in-Georgia PGY2 in pain management & palliative care pharmacy (PMPC) residency. WKH is thrilled to expand its reach to more pharmacists-in-training and plans to continue growing to meet the needs of the community and the pharmacy profession by adding an Emergency Medicine PGY2 in July 2023.
Wellstar Health System's Pharmacist-led Opioid Stewardship Program is a recipient of the 2022 ASHP Best Practice Award. The PGY2 PMPC resident trains alongside the clinical pharmacy pain specialists, who were awarded, staffing a unique and independent, pharmacy-based consult service. Pain specialists co-manage the complex pain management needs of hospitalized patients and perform daily prospective review for high-risk opioid therapies. To maintain and strengthen their internal medicine skills, the resident is assigned general clinical patient care responsibilities on one of the inpatient medical units every 6 weeks and rotates on-call weeks for attending codes. The residency program partners with Wellstar’s Palliative Medicine program, the largest palliative medicine program in the state, to provide an enhanced learning opportunity through interprofessional educational activities that include inpatient, outpatient, and at-home patient care services. Residents participate in interprofessional didactic learning groups with the palliative medicine fellows, bedside inpatient palliative care rounds, in-home palliative care nurse visits, and inpatient and outpatient palliative medicine interdisciplinary team rounds. Residents precept pharmacy students and may participate in a longitudinal teaching certificate program. Additional residency requirements include completing a flipped-model research project, facilitating an ACPE-accredited pharmacy continuing education presentation, and coordinating the annual PGY1/PGY2 residency group community service project.
