We are currently recruiting 2 positions for this residency program. The residency program is designed to provide a training opportunity for individuals desiring to develop clinical competency in the specialized area of psychiatric pharmacy. The program incorporates both inpatient and outpatient rotations devoted to the development of skills essential for the delivery of pharmaceutical care to patients with mental illness.
The resident spends 9 months in core learning experiences to include inpatient psychiatry, varying levels of outpatient psychiatry, and long-term care/longitudinal. The psychiatric pharmacy resident is responsible for participating in the design and implementation of appropriate therapeutic regimens, monitoring the outcome of therapy, assisting in the application of pharmacokinetic principles to individualize therapy as needed and in the provision of patient, disease and drug specific information to other members of the health care teams. Elective opportunities are numerous in both ambulatory and acute settings.
The resident will responsible to participate in journal club and case discussion sessions, didactic presentations, topics discussions, pharmacotherapy grand rounds, pharmacology grand rounds, pharmacotherapy seminars, and other presentations as deemed appropriate. Completion of a residency project is required, as well as a poster presentation at the American Association of Psychiatric Pharmacists (AAPP) annual meeting and at The University of Texas Celebrating Research.
The South Texas Veterans Health Care System is a comprehensive health care network that services the veterans of South Texas. It is composed of two divisions and an extensive network of clinics. The main hospital, Audie L. Murphy Memorial Veterans Hospital, has over 200 beds, including three intensive care units, an inpatient spinal cord injury unit, an inpatient long-term rehabilitation unit, three inpatient psychiatry units, and a bone marrow transplant unit, in addition to numerous primary care and specialty outpatient clinics. Clinical Pharmacy is an integral part of the veteran’s care. We have over 70 clinical pharmacy specialists covering areas such as Internal Medicine, Primary Care, Geriatrics, Hematology and Oncology, Mental Health, Infectious Diseases, Cardiology, Critical Care, Antimicrobial Stewardship, HIV, Hepatology, Renal, Anticoagulation, Bone Marrow Transplant Neurology and Spinal Cord Injury. We have 8 pharmacy residency programs to include PGY1 Pharmacy and PGY2 programs in Ambulatory Care, Geriatrics, Infectious Diseases, Internal Medicine, Oncology, Pain & Palliative Care and Psychiatry.
