We are currently recruiting 3 positions for this training program. The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency at the South Texas Veterans Health Care System is accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists. Pharmacists completing this residency will be able to provide proficient, confident, and compassionate direct patient care to a wide range of conditions. They will be accountable for promoting safe and effective drug usage and achieving optimal drug therapy outcomes as vital members of the health care team. These practitioners will exercise skill in educating other health care professionals, patients, and the community on drug therapy-related topics. Furthermore, they will demonstrate professional maturity by developing and following a personal philosophy of practice and exhibiting commitment to the profession. This program offers a wide range of inpatient and outpatient learning experiences in primary care, acute care, specialty services, and geriatrics.
The South Texas Veterans Health Care System is a comprehensive health care network that services the veterans of South Texas. It is composed of two divisions and an extensive network of clinics. The main hospital, Audie L. Murphy Memorial Veterans Hospital, has over 200 beds, including three intensive care units, an inpatient spinal cord injury unit, an inpatient long-term rehabilitation unit, three inpatient psychiatry units, and a bone marrow transplant unit, in addition to numerous primary care and specialty outpatient clinics. Clinical Pharmacy is an integral part of the veteran’s care. We have over 70 clinical pharmacy specialists covering areas such as Internal Medicine, Primary Care, Geriatrics, Hematology and Oncology, Mental Health, Infectious Diseases, Cardiology, Critical Care, Antimicrobial Stewardship, HIV, Hepatology, Renal, Anticoagulation, Bone Marrow Transplant Neurology and Spinal Cord Injury. We have 8 pharmacy residency programs to include PGY1 Pharmacy and PGY2 programs in Ambulatory Care, Geriatrics, Infectious Diseases, Internal Medicine, Oncology, Pain & Palliative Care and Psychiatry.
