PGY1 Program Purpose (effective July 2023): PGY1 residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives. Residents who successfully complete PGY1 residency programs will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership, and education, and be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e., BCPS), and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies.
This PGY1 program provides the resident with a solid foundation of experiences focusing on all aspects of inpatient care. We promote the development of a compassionate clinical pharmacy specialist, for the ever-changing healthcare landscape, through progressive clinical, managerial, and research experiences.
Residents will train at Houston Methodist, Texas Medical Center, which is the flagship, 900-bed teaching facility in the Houston Methodist Hospital System. It has earned worldwide recognition since it opened its doors in 1919, and is ranked as the #1 hospital in Texas by U.S. News and World Report. PGY1 pharmacy residents have had the opportunity to learn, grow, and develop innovative ideas at Houston Methodist since the inception of the residency program in 1987.
