Program Description
The residency is designed to develop practitioners with a high level of skills required to manage patient care in the ambulatory care and community pharmacy settings. Residents will participate in educational opportunities and experiences allowing the resident to gain expertise as a pharmacy practitioner in the community pharmacy setting and ambulatory care clinic. In addition, the resident will gain valuable insight into the management of a community pharmacy. The resident will provide pharmacy care via existing pharmacy care programs and will also develop new pharmacy care programs at the sites. The resident will be involved with disease state management programs, wellness programs, and medication dispensing activities. The resident will participate in the Teaching Certificate program offered by the College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions. Residents will also complete a research project and a service commitment.
Lewis Drug, Sioux Falls, SD
Lewis Drug is a regional pharmacy chain based out of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, consisting of more than 50 locations throughout South Dakota, Minnesota and Iowa. The 77-year old company was founded on strong patient relationships, community involvement, and a family focused employee environment. Lewis has been designated as the 14th largest pharmacy chain in the United States, with stores ranging in size from the large 70,000 square foot layout in urban areas, to a 1,000 square-foot stand-alone format in several non-metro locations. Some pharmacies are located adjacent to provider clinics and grocery stores, and two of their locations are closed-door Long Term Care pharmacy locations.
Lewis Drug has established many community events throughout the years, including Melanoma Monday, the Big Squeeze Hypertension Program, and a Community Syringe Disposal Program among others. They have hosted mass influenza immunization clinics across several sites for years. Currently, Lewis is striving to improve patient adherence and outcomes through various services including Smart Sync, MTM, and Smart Pack medication packaging.

The South Dakota State University College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions is nationally recognized for excellence in preparing students to provide high quality patient-centered care.
The "home" of the College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions is the Avera Health and Science Center. This state-of-the art facility opened in July 2010 and provides 97,000 square-feet of teaching laboratory, classroom, and office space, as well as 48,600 square-feet of research laboratory space. Prominent features of the building are the Laughrey Lecture Halls, the Markl Student Resource Center, and instructional laboratories for pharmacy skills, pharmaceutical sciences, and medical laboratory science.
