Purpose
The purpose of PGY1 pharmacy residency programs is to build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.
Specifically, the Jackson-Madison County General Hospital PGY1 pharmacy residency prepares pharmacists for community-based hospital practice, to serve as experiential adjunct faculty for a college of pharmacy, and/or to pursue second year post-graduate residency training in a focused area of practice.
Mission
The mission of our program is to build a foundation for community based clinical practice and leadership by developing skill sets in pharmacotherapy evaluations and management, direct patient care, literature evaluation, leadership and practice management, and project and presentation development.
Critical track is optional and includes the same required rotations with electives limited to those noted with * below. The purpose of the critical care track is to prepare residents for a PGY2 in critical care by focusing their experiences on the care of this unique patient population.

Jackson-Madison County General Hospital (JMCGH) is a large tertiary care community hospital in rural West Tennessee, and the flagship institution of West Tennessee Healthcare. Our service area includes 19 counties in West Tennessee. JMCGH is licensed for 642 beds, with an average daily census of roughly 450 patients, and offers the resident a well-rounded experience in patient care, project development, and practice management. We have relationships with two area colleges of pharmacy and conduct both introductory and advanced practice experiences at our institution.
