The Pharmacy Residency That Prepares You for a Clinical Career

At Providence St. Mary Medical Center (PSMMC), we believe strongly in the effectiveness of patient-centered, clinical pharmacy practice. It’s a philosophy that’s supported across the Providence organization.

PGY1 Residency Program

Our post-graduate year one (PGY1) residency is a one-year clinical and administrative program which meets the four main requirements outlined by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists including patient care, advancing practice, leadership, and education. Academic opportunities are offered through Washington State University College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.

In our PGY1 pharmacy residency you’ll benefit from our unique training program that takes advantage of the wide variety of rotations and learning experiences within both acute and ambulatory care settings. Everything you learn about pharmacy practice will be based in our patient-centered mission of providing compassionate care.

This residency program is designed to provide a broad overview of institutional pharmacy practice and is tailored to meet the needs of each resident. Graduates will be prepared to provide advanced pharmaceutical care services to a wide variety of patients in diverse practice settings.

Providence St. Mary Medical Center is an acute-care, general and referral center offering a full range of adult/pediatric medical, surgical, and critical care services.

Our pharmacy department provides centralized order entry with automated unit dose and IV admixture distribution. Our clinical pharmacists provide service to the entire hospital, including pharmacokinetic consultation, drug information, antimicrobial stewardship, total parenteral nutrition consultation, pharmacotherapy infusion clinic, transitions of care, and patient medication education for discharge.

Clinical pharmacists are involved in hospital and medical staff education, committee participation, clinical pathway development, medication utilization evaluation, adverse drug reaction monitoring and reporting, quality assurance and competency assessment.

Residents will complete an investigation of a particular aspect of pharmacy practice, which will span the length of their residency.

Academic Opportunities with Washington State University

Our relationship with the College of Pharmacy affords our residents many opportunities throughout the year. As a resident, you’ll have teaching opportunities throughout the curriculum, including didactic lectures, small group teaching in Pharmaceutical Care Laboratory and assistance with precepting 4th-year students on rotations, as well as the ability to obtain a teaching certificate.

Salary, Benefits and Travel Opportunities

As a pharmacy resident, you will be an employee of PSMMC and will qualify for employee benefits. Your benefits package will include medical, prescription, vision, and dental coverage (for you and your dependents) and paid time off. The residency program supports travel to state, regional, and national meetings.

Applicant Requirements

Prior to the start of the program, the resident shall be a graduate of a college of pharmacy accredited by the American Council of Pharmaceutical Education (ACPE) and shall be licensed or eligible for licensure in the State of Washington. Residents not licensed as a pharmacist at the beginning of the residency must be licensed as a pharmacy intern in the state of Washington. The applicant shall meet all the requirements for employment at PSMMC and meet the professional requirements of the Washington State Board Department of Pharmacy.

Strong residency candidates will possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, professionalism, leadership, and demonstrate a commitment to the provision of pharmaceutical care. Candidates must participate in the ASHP resident matching program.
