The PGY1 pharmacy residency at Baptist-Memphis (TN) provides an opportunity to accelerate the professional growth of a pharmacist in an inpatient community hospital setting. Major components of this residency include direct patient care, hospital committee involvement, teaching & precepting, completion of a research project & staffing. The 12-month program is composed of nine (9) learning experiences. Internal medicine, practice management, cardiology, infectious diseases, & critical care are required with elective opportunities available in oncology, emergency medicine, neurology, solid organ transplant, pain management & Stem Cell Transplant. Longitudinal projects will be based on hospital and department initiatives and related to medication utilization and safety. Residents complete a yearlong research project that contributes to the advancement of pharmaceutical care. Residents present research findings at the ASHP MYCM (poster) & the Mid-South Residency Conference. Extensive opportunities for teaching including precepting of students, leading small group sessions, didactic lectures, inservices and participating in a teaching certification program are available to the resident also.

Resident Responsibilities & Opportunities
Assess medication appropriateness through chart review and during interdisciplinary rounds
Manage physician-initiated pharmacy consults
-Nutrition support/TPNs -Anticoagulant monitoring
-Patient education -Dosing adjustments for patient conditions
-Pharmacokinetic monitoring -Drug information
Assist in medication related core measure compliance practices based on patient disease state (ACS, stroke, vaccines)
Provide medication related support during emergency response
Counsel patients on high-risk medications
Seek to improve patient care, safety, and economic impact relating to medication usage & delivery
Assist in teaching, precepting, and evaluating students on rotations and through didactic and application-based classes
Learning Experience Information
Clinical and management learning experiences are one month in length. Residents have the option of choosing up to four (4) electives or repeating a required rotation in an advanced format for a total of nine (9) learning experiences. Longitudinal experiences are 12 months in length & concentrated experiences are variable in length as described below.
