Residency Showcase Program Listings

The PGY1 pharmacy residency at Baptist-Memphis (TN) provides an opportunity to accelerate the professional growth of a pharmacist in an inpatient community hospital setting. Major components of this residency include direct patient care, hospital committee involvement, teaching & precepting, completion of a research project & staffing. The 12-month program is composed of nine (9) learning experiences. Internal medicine, practice management, cardiology, infectious diseases, & critical care are required with elective opportunities available in oncology, emergency medicine, neurology, solid organ transplant, pain management & Stem Cell Transplant. Longitudinal projects will be based on hospital and department initiatives and related to medication utilization and safety.  Residents complete a yearlong research project that contributes to the advancement of pharmaceutical care. Residents present  research findings at the ASHP MYCM (poster) & the Mid-South Residency Conference. Extensive opportunities for teaching including precepting of students, leading small group sessions, didactic lectures, inservices and participating in a teaching certification program are available to the resident also.

Resident Responsibilities & Opportunities

• Assess medication appropriateness through chart review and during interdisciplinary rounds
• Manage physician-initiated pharmacy consults

               -Nutrition support/TPNs       -Anticoagulant monitoring

               -Patient education        -Dosing adjustments for patient conditions

               -Pharmacokinetic monitoring       -Drug information                 

• Assist in medication related core measure compliance practices based on patient disease state (ACS, stroke, vaccines)
• Provide medication related support during emergency response
• Counsel patients on high-risk medications
• Seek to improve patient care, safety, and economic impact relating to medication usage & delivery
• Assist in teaching, precepting, and evaluating students on rotations and through didactic and application-based classes

 Learning Experience Information

Clinical and management learning experiences are one month in length. Residents have the option of choosing up to four (4) electives or repeating a required rotation in an advanced format for a total of nine (9) learning experiences. Longitudinal experiences are 12 months in length & concentrated experiences are variable in length as described below.

Required Learning Experiences

• General Orientation (6 weeks)
• Cardiology (Acute Care or TOC)
• Critical Care (Med/Surg, Cardiac OR Neuro)

Concentrated Learning Experiences

• Infectious Diseases & antimicrobial stewardship (3 weeks - Rotation #1)
• Resident Run Clinical Service Weeks (2 weeks at the end of the residency year)

Longitudinal Learning Experiences (12 months)

• Ambulatory Care
  • Consultative pharmacy related patient care services at an Adult Medicine Clinic OR Transitions of Care Service at the hospital 
• Teaching and Precepting including a Teaching Certificate Program 
  • Didactic Lecture, facilitating Applied Therapeutics course, precepting students
• Other Education
  • Journal Club; ACPE Accredited Continuing Education Program (2); Pharmacy Newsletter and Clinical Writing assignment relating to hospital safety

Resident Completion Requirements

• Successful completion of longitudinal teaching activities including:
• ACPE-accredited continuing education program for system pharmacy department staff & students (2)
• Pharmacy department newsletter
• Journal club
• Clinical writing assignment on hospital safety
• Completion of a yearlong research project relating to pharmacy practice
• Poster presentation at national meeting
• Presentation at regional residency conference
• Achievement in 85% of evaluable learning objectives for the residency program per ASHP standards
• Completion of the Teaching Certificate Program 
• Coverage of clinical pharmacy consults and/or staffing every 3rd weekend
• Evening staffing one night per week (non clinical consult weeks) for main pharmacy order verification (4 nights/9 weeks) 
• Clinical coverage of 1 major and 2 minor holidays

Eligibility Requirements

• Graduate or candidate for graduation of an ACPE accredited pharmacy degree program
• Eligible for Tennessee license
• US citizenship or have a permanent VISA
