The PGY2 Emergency Medicine Residency at Valleywise Health is a 12-month program. PGY2 Emergency Medicine Pharmacy Residents will receive training in the management of medical emergencies for a variety of disease states encountered in the acute care setting. They will be responsible for achieving optimal drug therapy outcomes as part of an interdisciplinary health care team through active participation in the development of and monitoring of patient’s therapeutic regimens. The pharmacy residents will expand the skills learned during their PGY1 Pharmacy Residency experience in written and verbal communication and in educating health care professionals, patients, and students on drug-related topics.
A broad range of clinical pharmacy services are provided within VHMC including emergency medicine, trauma, pediatric and adult critical care, burn care, internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, neonatology, and infectious diseases. The pharmacy resident serves as a member of the interdisciplinary patient care team and will be committed to optimizing patient medication outcomes in a number of these care areas.
Specific Features of the Residency Program
Core rotations include orientation, two Adult Emergency Medicine, two Trauma, two Pediatric Emergency Medicine, one Burn Intensive Care, and one Toxicology rotation. In addition, the resident will participate in several longitudinal experiences including Research, Toxicology, Staffing, and Pharmacy Practice Management. The resident will have the opportunity to select additional elective experiences including infectious diseases, surgical intensive care, medical intensive care, burn emergency care, psychiatry, and electives of the core rotations. Additional elective rotations will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Concentrated learning experiences in Emergency Medical Services, Precepting, Didactic Presentations, Continuing Education Presentation, and two Pharmacy and Therapeutics (P&T) projects (i.e. medication use evaluation (MUE), formulary request, drug class review (DCR), order set development/review, policy/protocol development/review, etc.).
Each resident is expected to complete a longitudinal research project under the guidance of a project preceptor. Results will be presented at a regional conference.
VHMC is a clerkship site for Doctor of Pharmacy Candidates from the University of Arizona College of Pharmacy, Midwestern University College of Pharmacy-Glendale, Creighton University School of Pharmacy, and other accredited institutions. The resident may serve as a clinical co-preceptor for pharmacy students in addition to PGY1 Pharmacy Residents. The resident will provide in-service education to pharmacists, nurses, physicians, allied health professionals, students, and patients as assigned.
One continuing education (CE) presentation and two didactic presentations are required. Additional educational presentations such as journal club or educational seminars may be assigned.
Required Projects: Research Project (1), Presentation (2), CE Presentation (1), and a combination of two of the following: MUE, DCR, formulary request, or policy, protocol or order set review/development.
Required Staffing: Clinical emergency medicine staffing will occur no more than 1 weekend per month and 8 weekends throughout the year. Residents are required to work 1 major and 1 minor holiday in addition to the 8 weekends.
There is one PGY2 Emergency Medicine Resident position available for the 2024-2025 program year.
Educational Requirements
Candidates must have graduated from an Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) accredited Doctor of Pharmacy program and they must be participating in, or have completed, an ASHP-accredited PGY1 pharmacy residency program. Candidates must be eligible for licensure by the Arizona Board of Pharmacy. Residents are expected to be licensed by August 1, 2024. Residents must provide PGY1 Residency Certificate of Completion within the first week of the residency year.

The PGY-2 Emergency Medicine Pharmacy Practice Residency offered by Valleywise Health is focused on adult and pediatric emergency medicine, trauma care, critical care, and burn care at Valleywise Health Medical Center (VHMC).
