Program Specific information:
The Managed Care PGY1 residency at the University of Michigan Prescription Drug Plan offers a unique experience working in the stimulating pharmacy benefits world from a payer’s perspective. The PDP PGY1 program abides by the standards set forth by ASHP and AMCP for accredited PGY1 Managed Care programs. The pharmacy benefit team interacts with world-renowned experts in the fields of medicine, pharmacy, and managed care to achieve the best mix of state-of-the-art care and cost-effectiveness. In many instances, we work with researchers within our organization who are pivotal in the drug research, development, and approval process. By collaborating with researchers and academics, we obtain the unique perspective that only a few managed care residencies have.
Program Purpose:
The University of Michigan PDP’s PGY1 managed care residency program prepares the resident to be proficient in several areas of managed care pharmacy, including formulary management, pharmacy benefit design, clinical program development, drug use management, and drug information communications.
The PDP residency program builds upon the Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and outcomes to develop pharmacist clinicians with diverse patient care, leadership, and education skills who are eligible for board certification and postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.
Residents completing this program will be qualified and confident to practice as managed care pharmacists in a variety of managed care practice settings including health plans, pharmacy benefit management organizations, and physician groups.

Residency candidates must be a graduate of a College of Pharmacy accredited in the U.S. and must be eligible for or hold active pharmacist and controlled substance licensure in the State of Michigan.
