Aimed at training the future leaders of integrated health systems, this program combines the PGY1 Pharmacy – Aurora Health Care Metro, Inc. residency with the PGY2 Health System Pharmacy Administration & Leadership residency for a two-year program.
During the PGY1 year, residents spend the majority of their time at Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center, with the opportunity to spend time at Aurora Sinai Medical Center – both located in Milwaukee, WI. Residents complete core learning experiences in direct patient care, drug use policy, administration, medication safety, and staffing. Residents choose learning experiences in adult medicine, surgical medicine, oncology, cardiology, cardiothoracic transplant, abdominal transplant, cardiac and cardiac surgery intensive care, medical intensive care, surgical intensive care, neurological/neurosurgical intensive care, neonatal intensive care, operating room, emergency department, infectious diseases, investigational drugs, informatics, clinical teaching/certificate, and clinics including family medicine, anticoagulation, oncology, heart failure, and population health. Professional development and leadership are emphasized, and each resident’s experiences are customized based on their interests and needs.
During the PGY2 year, residents spend time at numerous sites within the system based on project, learning experience, and service needs. In addition, learning experiences in hospitals, clinics, and pharmacies throughout our service area in Wisconsin and Illinois are offered. Each PGY2 resident is a member of the administrative team for a health system's department of pharmacy. Residents gain experience in all aspects of pharmacy practice management in a complex organization. Core learning experiences include drug use policy, purchasing/inventory control, automation/technology, inpatient supervision, and financial, clinical, and ambulatory care management, and experiences are customized to meet the resident's goals and interests.
The PGY2 year builds on the clinical foundation developed during the PGY1 year to develop pharmacists capable of being future pharmacy leaders of integrated health systems. This program gives residents exposure and experience with the entirety of Advocate Health-Midwest Region pharmacy services.
Interested residents can also complete a Masters of Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as part of this program. Residents selecting this option engage in a rigorous and in-depth study of leadership in health-system pharmacy administration and the principles of the medication use process, work with multiple health systems and practice settings, and network with residents and leaders across those spaces.
Residents interested in careers as clinical coordinators, supervisors, managers or directors in an integrated health system are encouraged to apply.
All applicants must apply through PhORCAS and meet the following criteria:
Graduate of an ACPE-accredited school of pharmacy (or one in process of pursuing accreditation) or have a Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Examination Committee (FPGEC) certificate from the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP).
