The purpose of the Gulf Coast Veterans Health Care System PGY1 pharmacy residency program is to build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacy specialists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training. The program prepares pharmacist clinicians for patient care positions in acute care and ambulatory care settings as well as positions in PGY2 residency or fellowship. Residents will be provided the opportunity to accelerate their growth beyond entry-level professional competence in patient-centered care, pharmacy operational services, and to further the development of leadership skills that can be applied to any practice setting.
Gulf Coast Veterans Health Care system takes pride in our history of producing strong, compassionate clinicians through a variety of program options. There are two ambulatory care focused PGY1 positions at the Pensacola VA Clinic as well as one general PGY1 and one mental health focused PGY1 position at our Biloxi VA Medical Center. The longitudinal component with learning experiences in primary care, anticoagulation, outpatient mental health, and pharmacy administration allows residents to learn life long clinical skills such as time management, building relationships with other health care providers and patients, and leadership as well as the added benefit of following patients over time. There are also strong block learning experiences to round out the year in areas such as Home Based Primary Care, Geriatrics/Community Living Center, adult medicine, outpatient pharmacy, inpatient pharmacy, opioid stewardship, women's health, and informatics. Additionally, the resident is able to expand on the required precepting skills learning experience through an optional teaching certificate program with Auburn's Harrison College of Pharmacy.
