PGY1 pharmacy residency programs build on Pharm.D. education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.
Residents completing the PGY1 residency program at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center will be competent, autonomous and confident clinical pharmacists who are ready to assume a position as a clinical pharmacist, PGY2 resident, or fellow in the acute or ambulatory care setting. Additionally, the program prepares our graduating clinical pharmacists to conduct outcomes related research and provide teaching in the form of preceptorship, didactic education or education to our patients and healthcare partners.
KEY ROTATIONS / EXPERIENCES
Rotational experiences for the PGY1 residency in acute care are designed to provide the resident with a broad exposure to pharmacy practice and patient populations. One of the most notable features of the PGY1 residency at the OSUWMC is the wide variety of rotation options and flexibility in scheduling.
The resident is required to complete 6 weeks of orientation in addition to one administrative rotation. Within the first 4 months of residency, residents will be required to complete a clinical rotation in internal medicine. This will ensure that the resident has a solid foundation of general knowledge and skills upon which to build throughout the year. The remaining 9 months of the residency year are composed of elective rotation choices.
Rotation selections will be guided by the Residency Program Director, and will ensure the resident achieves a broad range of experiences and exposure to various patient populations.
Other key experiences during the residency will include the completion of a major research project, the completion of an audits while on their administration rotation, participate in a clinical on call program, delivery of one resident education session (RES) lecture, precepting four P2 students on a one week IPPE rotation, and volunteer work at the Columbus Free Clinic. The resident will also have the opportunity to attend the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting in addition to presenting their finalized research project at the Great Lakes Pharmacy Residency Conference.

The PGY1 residency program provides a unique opportunity for exposure to highly trained preceptors in many practice areas. Residents may choose rotations in areas such as internal medicine, transplant, surgery, critical care, cardiology, emergency medicine, hematology/oncology, and ambulatory care. In addition to numerous direct patient care rotation opportunities, there are numerous indirect patient care rotation opportunities which include investigational drug services, pharmacy administration, medication safety, information technology, and academia.
