PGY-2 Program Purpose:

PGY2 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in specialized areas of practice. PGY2 residencies provide residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care or other advanced practice settings.

Residents who successfully complete an accredited PGY2 pharmacy residency are prepared for advanced patient care, academic, or other specialized positions, along with board certification, if available.

Stanford PGY-2 Emergency Medicine Pharmacy Program Mission

The mission of the PGY-2 EM Pharmacy Residency Program is to provide residents with challenging learning experiences and training to prepare them to become a competent and confident emergency medicine clinical pharmacist. Upon completion of the residency program, the resident will:

1. Develop the clinical skills necessary to provide a high level of care in a fast paced, high acuity emergency department setting
2. Function as an effective member of the health care team
3. Educate health care professionals, students, patients, and the community about effective and safe medication use
4. Develop excellent written and verbal communication skills
5. Demonstrate time management and problem-solving skills
6. Become a leader within the pharmacy profession

Program Structure

The program follows the ASHP Residency Learning System (RLS) and its goals and learning objectives are consistent with standards developed by ASHP.

Longitudinal Experiences

• Research (12 months)
  • The resident is required to complete all Institutional Review Board (IRB)-required training and select a project to be completed and presented at a professional conference by the end of the year. The resident is also required to complete a final research manuscript suitable for publication.
    
    
•  Practice Management and Leadership (12 months)
  • The resident will assist with practice management through active membership in a variety of EM-related committees. The resident will participate in review of policies and procedures, drug monograph, drug-class review, medication utilization evaluation, and identifying areas of improvement for the EM pharmacy clinical services.
    
    
• Emergency Department Staffing (12 months)
  • The resident is expected to independent staff two 10-hour weekend shifts every 4 weeks. The resident will also be scheduled to staff one major and one minor holiday.

Compensation and Benefits

The resident will receive a competitive annual stipend of approximately $81,000 with full benefits, including an excellent health care benefits package and 10 days of paid time off (PTO). In addition, the resident will receive educational leave and a stipend to attend and participate in various pharmacy or emergency medicine conferences.
