Emergency medicine (EM) pharmacy is a rapidly growing field with new residency programs and job openings appearing every year. The purpose of the Mission Hospitals Emergency Medicine residency program is to graduate proficient pharmacy clinicians who have advanced practice and precepting skills needed to be confident in an emergency department, academia, or other specialized positions. Residents become equipped to be integral members of a multi-disciplinary team possessing a broad knowledge of evidence-based emergency medicine drug therapy.
Opportunities for elective experiences exist throughout the health system and may be tailored to fit the resident’s needs. The resident will also serve as a primary preceptor for a PY4 student in the ED, receives a UNC adjunct faculty appointment and has lecture opportunities in critical care and toxicology.
The goal of the residency is to provide advanced training in emergency care through the following experiences: • Prospective order review • Response to traumas and other code-type situations • Discharge antibiotic follow up • Patient education • Drug information • Toxicology training • Consultations • Interdepartmental committee participation
