Affectionately known as the “Baby Hospital,” Ascension St. Joseph is a community teaching hospital providing acute and subacute services in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, with extensive outpatient services, a bustling emergency department and nationally recognized maternity and critical care services.
Our hospital has been serving the community with compassion since 1879, with the pharmacy residency training program established in 2004. Pharmacy residents at Ascension St. Joseph are integral members of both the department and hospital, and allow us to provide comprehensive pharmacy services to our patients. The pharmacy residency program is headquartered at Ascension St. Joseph with resident training also conducted at a sister campus, Ascension SE Wisconsin Hospital – Elmbrook Campus, and an off-site chemotherapy infusion center.
Residency purpose PGY1 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.

Expectations during the residency year • Licensure in the state of Wisconsin within 90 days of starting the program • Advanced CardiovascularLlife Support certification • Attend leadership development meetings • Resident attendance at every cardiac and respiratory arrest while on-site • Attendance at Milwaukee citywide residency conferences • Completion of a yearlong residency project with presentation of findings and a manuscript • Serve as a clinical preceptor for Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience (IPPE) and Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience (APPE) students Staffing requirement • Residents will staff every third weekend. • Centralized and decentralized staffing
