RESIDENCY PROGRAM PURPOSE
The Emergency Medicine PGY2 Pharmacy Residency Program will build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency training to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives for advanced practice areas. Residents who successfully complete PGY2 residency programs are prepared for advanced patient care or other specialized positions, and board certification in the advanced practice area, if available.
RESIDENCY PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Our goal is to create EM trained clinical pharmacists that are not only excited about the idea of increasing EM pharmacist’s reach through starting their own program in an emergency department in need, but also equipped with the skills needed to make that program successful, promote growth, and increase patient safety whenever and wherever a patient enters an emergency room.
The PGY2 Emergency Medicine residency program will utilize the collective assets of Wellstar Health System (WHS) to accomplish the assigned goals and objectives. Although the majority of the residency year is conducted at WHS's main campus, Wellstar Kennestone, residents will get the opportunity to visit other campuses to work alongside pharmacy specialists and community partners for rotations including Burn ICU, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Community EM, and Toxicology.
LEARNING EXPERIENCES (LEs)
The resident will spend 4-6 weeks in July-August in orientation. Required patient care LEs are generally 4-5 weeks in length. Each LE has its own goals, objectives, and schedule. Learning experiences often vary regarding daily start and end times, presentation requirements, rounding responsibilities, and other duties.
The resident will have the opportunity to choose from among several Elective LEs, as preceptor availability and program space arises.

The Wellstar Kennestone Pharmacy Department inpatient team utilizes a hybrid model, consisting of both centralized pharmacists and technicians, as well as unit-based specialty pharmacists, who assist the clinical pharmacy team with unit-based profile reviews and attending interdisciplinary rounds.
The Emergency Medicine Pharmacy (EMP) team consists of ten, specialty trained emergency medicine pharmacists, who provide EM pharmacy services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. EMPs play an integral role in the management of both adult and pediatric patients, serve as subject matter experts on a variety of interdisciplinary committees and serve as preceptors for Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience (APPE) students, PGY1 and PGY2 residents.
