Brigham and Women's Hospital's pharmacy department consists of over 300 staff members, including pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, pharmacy residents, pharmacy interns, and support staff. The central pharmacy at the main campus is fully operational 24/7, providing drug preparation and procurement services for the entire campus and many off site locations. Pharmacy technicians and pharmacists prepare oral and parenteral dosage forms to serve our broad patient care needs, including a large investigational drug service and three outpatient pharmacies. Pharmacy operations have played a vital role in the execution of our hospital and clinic based covid vaccination programs in recent years. Members of the pharmacy staff serve on over 70 different hospital committees and facilitate system changes to promote patient safety, equity and continuous quality improvement based on best practices.
Pharmacists are deployed across the institution to provide clinical pharmacy expertise and experience in a multitude of areas including medical/surgical units, ED, ICUs, perioperative areas, and ambulatory clinic services. On top of state licensure, most pharmacists have Doctorate degrees, have complet...ed specialized residency training programs, obtained board certifications. Pharmacists work directly as a member of the care team optimizing drug therapy, providing medical education, prescribing as part of collaborative drug therapy management agreements, and conducting research.
