This Atrium Health Cabarrus PGY1 Program is focused primarily in the Ambulatory Care setting.

Purpose

PGY1 residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives. Residents who successfully complete PGY1 residency programs will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership, and education, and be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e., BCPS), and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies.

Program Overview

Within the Ambulatory Care setting, we are located in the Concord, NC region (3 positions), about 35 minutes north of Charlotte. Atrium Health Cabarrus is a progressive 457-bed hospital located just 20 miles from Charlotte in Concord, NC. Our highly skilled interdisciplinary healthcare team, innovative technology, and commitment to personalized care makes Atrium Health Cabarrus a leading destination for future healthcare professionals.

Ambulatory Care services and residency education opportunities are offered at multiple clinical sites. These practices and/or physicians hold National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) recognition for Patient-Centered Medical Home and Diabetes and offer advanced services to patients within the medical home. Ambulatory Care services within Atrium Health consist of multiple models, such as embedded pharmacists, a pharmacist-run anticoagulation clinic, a team transitions of care clinic, and population health care teams. These pharmacists are deployed across the greater Charlotte region, and services are expanding to more rural areas and hospitals. The pharmacists practicing within the ambulatory care pharmacy department are Clinical Pharmacist Practitioners (CPPs) working at the top of their licenses as allowed in the state of North Carolina.

Collaborative practice agreements are utilized in the ambulatory care setting between pharmacists and referring providers. Pharmacists at Atrium Health successfully bill for their unique comprehensive medication management services.

Program Structure

This 12-month American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) accredited residency offers experience in a variety of inter-disciplinary practice settings. Required clinical learning experiences are completed in one-month blocks with the majority completed at outpatient clinics. Developing skills to provide safe medication use through patient-focused, evidence-based medication management is the foundation and focus of our training. A fundamental feature of the residency is commitment to regular and extensive interaction between the resident and preceptors. Residents may select elective rotations based on their interests and specific career goals. Each resident will meet quarterly with the residency program director and/or residency coordinator to discuss the resident’s individual goals and tailor their schedule to meet such goals as well as maximize the resident’s opportunities for learning experiences. The resident’s training is intensive and rigorous, providing many opportunities for growth of clinical skills, knowledge base and job management skills. In addition to developing clinical skills, residents gain experience in clinical research. This PGY1 Pharmacy Residency at Atrium Health Cabarrus provides residents with the skills and knowledge required to become competent pharmacy practitioners with advanced skills in the ambulatory care setting. This PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program is a postgraduate training experience with emphasis on pharmaceutical care in the outpatient, ambulatory care setting.

Eligibility

Doctor of Pharmacy or equivalent degree from an ACPE-accredited school of pharmacy, eligibility for pharmacist licensure in North Carolina (www.ncbop.org), U.S. citizen or a U.S. permanent resident (i.e. have a U.S. Green Card). Individuals who require visa sponsorship are not eligible candidates for our residency program. Minimum GPA for consideration is 3.0.

Instructions

Interested applicants should complete the following:

• Register for the ASHP Residency Matching Program (natmatch.com/ashprmp).
• Ensure eligibility for North Carolina licensure (ncbop.org). Licensure must be obtained by September 1st of the residency year.
• Submit a completed application for the residency program via PhORCAS (ashp.org/phorcas) by January 2nd.  Include in PhorCas application a letter of intent, an official college of pharmacy transcript, 3 letters of reference, and CV.

Clinical, operational and educational aspects of pharmacy practice are emphasized during this comprehensive training experience. Developing skills to provide safe medication use through patient-focused, evidence-based medication management is the foundation and focus of our training. A fundamental feature of the residency is commitment to regular and extensive interaction between the resident and preceptors.
