PURPOSE OF PGY1 MANAGED CARE PHARMACY RESIDENCY
From the Accreditation Standard prepared jointly by ASHP and AMCP:
PGY1 Managed Care pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and outcomes to develop managed care pharmacist clinicians with diverse patient care, leadership and education skills who are eligible for board certification and postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training. A managed care residency will provide systematic training of pharmacists to achieve professional competence in the delivery of patient care and managed care pharmacy practice.
CLAREST HEALTH PGY1 PROGRAM SPECIFIC DETAILS
Clarest Health provides clinical program and medication management software and services to long-term care facilities (LTCs), managed care organizations (MCOs), prescription benefit managers (PBMs), accountable care organizations (ACOs) and self-insured employers.
In this environment, PGY-1 training will immerse the resident in the implementation and operation of medication management and clinical programs. Residents will participate in the design and development of clinical programs with a special emphasis on the management and maintenance of drug information reference databases. Finally, residents will be exposed to the sale and marketing of clinical programs across a wide variety of managed care organization types and sizes. The resident will gain an understanding of foundation managed care concepts (e.g. formulary management and benefit design) with a strong focus on direct provision of patient care, clinical program development, and medication management program implementation and administration. Residents will gain experience in providing clinical services at both individual and population levels. Clarest residents will develop an especially firm grasp of the pharmacist’s role and function in a Medicare Part D environment.
Graduates of this program will be prepared to step into a clinical program management role in a variety of environments. Most importantly, this residency strives to instill graduates with enthusiasm for the profession, problem solving, and personal growth, while holding them to the highest ethical standards. This residency graduates pharmacy leaders who are dedicated to a career of pharmacy service and have potential for future development to assume the uppermost responsibilities of leadership and citizenship in the medical community. Graduates of the PGY-1 Residency will be prepared to enter clinical practice, a fellowship program, or a PGY-2 residency.
The Clarest Health Managed Care Pharmacy Residency Program is committed to providing a residency program that meets the accreditation standards and underlying principles set forth by ASHP/AMCP for PGY-1 Managed Care Pharmacy Residency Programs. The program is adapted to the unique goals, objectives and career plans of the resident. Residency program requirements may be altered due to changes as required and directed by ASHP guidance.
