Residency Showcase Program Listings

The Inova PGY1 Community-Based Residency provides clinical and administrative training for pharmacists suitable for entry into an advanced patient care role as a community or ambulatory care pharmacist or matriculation into a PGY2 residency program. We are a fairly new program (accredited in 2022) and are excited to offer the opportunity for our residents to help shape our program.  Our residents will primarily work at our Inova Schar Cancer Institute specialty pharmacy. At Schar, they will staff, counsel patients, educate pharmacy and other team members about new medications and therapies, develop specific patient care programs and disease state management programs based on current need and the resident's interests. Experience performing medication therapy management through our MTM learning experience is also provided. Numerous opportunities exist for the residents to gain management experience and to initiate quality improvement projects and new business projects working with the pharmacy manager. The residents will staff at the Inova Fairfax Schar Heart and Vascular retail pharmacy with a robust Meds-to-Beds program. The residents will also have the opportunity to manage ambulatory patients in a variety of settings, including vulnerable populations (HIV & LBGTQ), anticoagulation clinic and primary care clinics.  We offer elective rotations in a variety of settings and focus areas to expose our residents to as many areas of community/ambulatory care pharmacy as possible.

Rotations are typically longitudinal, varying from 2 to 10 months in length.

• Ambulatory Care-Primary Care clinic

Elective Rotations include:

• Teaching and Learning Certificate – in collaboration with the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Pharmacy
• Infusion Pharmacy (5 weeks)
• Medication Safety (5 weeks)
• Ambulatory Care - Advanced Vulnerable Populations

Teaching Opportunities

In addition to the optional Teaching and Learning Certificate, the resident will have the opportunity to precept an APPE student in the spring of the residency year. Opportunities for oral/written patient education, staff and other team member education are available during many of the rotations as the need arises. Voluntary participation in the VCU School of Pharmacy Foundations Course (skills lab) is also available.

The applicant will be a PharmD graduate of an ACPE School of Pharmacy

The applicant will be licensed or eligible for licensure in Virginia.

Qualified applicants will be selected and invited for an interview (virtual or in-person) in January and February. After the interviews, applicants will be ranked and rankings submitted to the ASHP resident matching program. Our NMS code is 284415.

About Inova PGY1 Community-based Residency

Inova retail and specialty pharmacies are part of the Inova Health System. Inova has in-house retail pharmacies at Fair Oaks Hospital, Fairfax Hospital, Loudoun Hospital and the Schar Cancer Institute. The Schar pharmacy is both a retail and URAC and ACHC accredited specialty pharmacy. We have an integrated model of patient care which includes practice agreements with many providers to manage their prior authorization process for specialty medications. We provided MTM services with an emphasis on our specialty patients. Fair Oaks and Fairfax pharmacies have a Meds-to-Beds program in which patients' prescriptions are filled and delivered to their rooms upon discharge. We work with transplant, HIV, primary and transitions of care clinics, neurology and oncology clinics to provided patients with medications, resources and education to manage their conditions.
