UW Health SwedishAmerican is a 357-bed, full-service, non-profit hospital serving the greater Rockford region, northern Illinois, and southern Wisconsin. SwedishAmerican is also a teaching hospital that hosts the University of Illinois College of Medicine's residency program. Clinical pharmacists are assigned to the emergency department, each floor of the hospital, specialty pharmacy, cancer center, retail pharmacy, and the pharmacist managed anticoagulation clinic.
The PGY2 Critical Care Pharmacy residency program at UW Health SwedishAmerican allows the resident to gain clinical skills and hands on experience by being part of a multidisciplinary team in a wide range of clinical areas tailored to the resident's interests in critical care. The critical care unit (CCU) is a 30 bed mixed medical, surgical, and neuro intensive care unit in the Heart Hospital. The critical care pharmacists at UW Health SwedishAmerican provide prospective medication order review and active participation in multidisciplinary rounds. Pharmacists also provide recommendations and prepare medications during cardiac resuscitations, intubations, and other medical emergencies in the critical care unit and hospital.
The goal of this Critical Care PGY2 residency is to develop future critical care specialists. As a graduate of the residency program at UW Health SwedishAmerican, residents will receive extensive training in all key critical care areas to allow them to be qualified for a variety of positions in critical care and prepare them for board certification.
