UW Health SwedishAmerican Hospital is a 357-bed non-profit, urban, community teaching hospital serving the greater Rockford area, northern Illinois, and southern Wisconsin. The 49-bed emergency department is a Level II Trauma Center, is an Emergency Department Approved for Pediatrics, has a psychiatric area, and provides care for over 70,000 patients per year. The Emergency Department sees over 1,000 total tracked trauma cases per year, two-thirds of which comprise Category I and II trauma activations. This number does not include hundreds of non-tracked trauma patients that are seen every year from minor elderly falls to broken bones on the playground.
The PGY2 Emergency Medicine Pharmacy residency program at UW Health SwedishAmerican Hospital allows the resident to gain hands-on patient care experience while building their clinical skills by being part of a multidisciplinary team in the emergency department. The emergency medicine pharmacists provide prospective medication order review, culture review and intervention, and bedside care. Bedside care includes recommending and preparing medications during cardiac resuscitations, procedural sedations, intubations, and other medical emergencies. Bedside care also includes working up toxicology cases, patient and family education, and consulting on complex patients with providers. The emergency medicine pharmacists also provide education to providers and nurses while continuing to improve the safety and appropriateness of medications through medication use evaluations, projects, and research.
In addition to an Illinois Poison Center rotation, residents will also participate in many of the over 500 yearly toxicology cases reported from our emergency department. The resident will also have numerous opportunities to work with EMS and ride with paramedics while providing pharmacy education monthly. Additionally, SwedishAmerican is a teaching hospital for students from multiple colleges of Pharmacy, Nursing, Health Professions, and the University of Illinois College of Medicine's Family Medicine Residency Program.
