For well over a century, St. Joseph’s Medical Center has served the Brainerd Lakes Area providing high-quality health care services in a compassionate environment. St. Joseph’s Medical Center is a 162-bed hospital and Level III Trauma Center with a 24-hour emergency room. Also home to the Marilyn Covey Heart & Vascular Center and the St. Joseph’s Cancer Center, we take pride in bringing a wide range of services to residents and visitors of the Brainerd, Minnesota area. St. Joseph’s Medical Center adheres to the values of hospitality, stewardship, respect, joy, justice, teamwork and quality. St. Joseph’s Medical Center is part of Essentia Health, an integrated health system serving patients in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and North Dakota. The Essentia Health organization lives out its mission by having a patient-centered focus at 14 hospitals, 73 clinics, six long-term care facilities, three assisted living facilities, three independent living facilities, six ambulance services, 20 retail pharmacies, and one research institute.
The Post Graduate Year 1 (PGY1) pharmacy residency program at St. Joseph’s Medical Center (SJMC) was established in 2012. This program is accredited by the American Society of Health System Pharmacists. SJMC hospital pharmacy services employs 18 clinical pharmacists and 14 pharmacy technicians serving a rural population. Services are provided on-site for patients of SJMC, as well as remotely for patients of several critical access facilities. The pharmacy practice model is decentralized, integrated and supported by the Epic medical record. Pharmacists work collaboratively with other health care providers to provide order verification, drug distribution services and several clinical services including anticoagulation dosing and monitoring (e.g. warfarin, IV heparin), pharmacokinetic services, total parenteral nutrition management, dose and route adjustments, medication reconciliation, and antibiotic stewardship. Pharmacists also respond and actively participate in medical emergencies (e.g. Code Blue, Traumas, STEMI Response, Rapid Sequence Intubations, Stroke Code). The program is highly flexible and there is opportunity for customized rotations based on resident needs and preferences. Learning experiences include, but are not limited to:
