Residency Showcase Program Listings

The PGY-1 pharmacy residency program at Children's of Alabama features structured experiences in a broad variety of pediatric specialty areas of practice, along with the ability to tailor to individual goals and practice interests through unique elective opportunities. In addition to patient care activities, residents also have involvement in hospital committees, develop and present educational activities, participate in code/trauma response, have precepting opportunities, and complete a major research project. Other program highlights include a teaching and learning certificate program, competitive stipend and benefits, and paid travel to professional meetings. 

Children's offers three (3) ASHP accredited PGY-1 residency positions annually for applicants with a primary interest in pediatric pharmacy practice.  In addition, our program has a collaborative agreement with a pediatric PGY2 program through Samford University's McWhorter School of Pharmacy for which our residents may early commit. One clinical toxicology fellowship position is also available at the Alabama Poison Information Center onsite.

Required pediatric experiences include core rotations in pediatric hospital medicine, pediatric intensive care, hematology/oncology, neonatal intensive care, pulmonary, nephrology, and infectious diseases.  In addition, residents participate in longitudinal experiences in pharmacokinetics, ambulatory care, anticoagulation, drug information, pharmacy operations, and practice management.  Available electives include blood and bone marrow transplant, cardiology/heart transplant, cardiovascular intensive care, investigational drug study, emergency medicine, medication safety, psychiatry, toxicology, advanced practice experiences in core rotations, and additional experiences tailored to resident areas of interest.

Applicants must:

1. Be a graduate of or candidate for graduation from an ACPE accredited degree program (or one in the process of pursuing accreditation) or have a FPGEC certificate from NABP
   • Because of the necessary timelines of the residency program, Children's of Alabama does not sponsor visas for foreign pharmacy residency applicants.
2. Have obtained or will obtain a Pharm.D. degree by July 1st of the residency year 
3. Be eligible for pharmacist licensure in the State of Alabama
4. Have a minimum GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale during their pharmacy school curriculum. Candidates applying from pharmacy programs without GPAs shall provide an indication of academic performance through official documentation from their college of pharmacy.
5. Be available for an on-site interview in the month of February

Required application materials include: Letter of interest, curriculum vitae, official pharmacy school transcripts, and three (3) letters of reference, one of which must be from an employer or direct supervisor during employment
