Residency Showcase Program Listings

PGY1 residency programs build upon the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives. Residents who successfully complete PGY1 residency programs will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership, and education, and be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e., BCPS), and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies.

The Kroger Health PGY1 Community-Based Pharmacy Residency focuses on the development of community-based pharmacy practitioners who have the clinical and professional experiences needed to care for patients and advance the profession. After completion of the PGY1 Community-Based Pharmacy Residency Program, residents will be well qualified to manage a community-based pharmacy with integrated patient care services, hold clinical and leadership roles in community pharmacy, pursue a career in academia, and/or pursue additional post-graduate training opportunities.

To build upon the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop community-based pharmacist practitioners with diverse patient care, leadership, and education skills who are eligible to pursue advanced training opportunities, including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies and professional certifications.

The Fred Meyer Residency program takes place in a corporate community/ambulatory care pharmacy setting. In addition, residents will participate in a series of interdisciplinary experiences at The Vancouver Clinic as well as Washington State University.

Practice Site Descriptions

The residents’ primary practice sites are at the Orchards Fred Meyer pharmacy location, The Vancouver Clinic, and the Fred Meyer division office. Although the residency is based out of the locations listed above, the resident will spend time at other Fred Meyer pharmacy locations, and the Washington State College of Pharmacy campus in Spokane, WA.

Fred Meyer Pharmacy – Vancouver, WA

The resident’s primary practice site is a Fred Meyer Pharmacy location. Our pharmacies are committed to providing a holistic, personalized, quality health experience. In addition to dispensing medications and counseling, we provide everyday health and wellness services. These include vaccinations, health screenings, point of care testing, transitions of care services, medication management consisting of comprehensive and targeted medication reviews, medication synchronization, and adherence services. Chronic disease management programs are also delivered in our pharmacies and advanced clinical services with prescriptive authority are practiced where authorized. In select locations, pharmacists collaborate with nurse practitioners, physicians, dietitians, and other internal and external healthcare practitioners in patient care.

The Division Office leadership provides support and guidance for pharmacy locations in the division. The Division structure includes a Division Health and Wellness Leader (DHL), Pharmacy Practice Coordinators (PPCs), Operations Manager and Operational Specialists who are responsible for driving execution of the company’s strategic plan at the individual pharmacy level.

Washington State University

Washington State University’s PharmD program has prepared aspiring pharmacists for over 125 years to excel and become leaders in their field. The four-year professional curriculum combines a competency-based testing model with a cutting-edge active-learning classroom, including instruction in the professional and legal responsibilities that come with working in healthcare. In addition, students learn within a warm, collegial atmosphere where innovation and new thinking are encouraged, and opportunities for research and patient care abound.

The Vancouver Clinic

The Vancouver Clinic is a multidisciplinary clinic setting with a focus on chronic disease management in collaboration with other healthcare practitioners, utilizing transition of care services and the pharmacist led clinic. Within the transitional care clinic, pharmacists help to manage complex patients at high risk of hospital readmission in collaboration with a medical team including healthcare practitioners, registered nurses, a registered dietician, and medical assistants. Pharmacists review these patients to determine appropriateness of their medications, identify gaps in therapy, and identify cost concerns or any other barriers in therapy. The pharmacist completes a full medication reconciliation with the patient and counsels on any medication changes at the end of the visit. At the pharmacist-led clinic, pharmacists work-up and follow patients for chronic disease state management which can include hypertension, diabetes, polypharmacy, warfarin education, and possibly other disease states. Pharmacist prescribe through a collaborative drug therapy agreement (CDTA) in which they can order any medications and labs for the disease states listed within the CDTA.

What is a community-based pharmacy residency program?

• A community-based pharmacy residency program is a one-year postgraduate training program focused on advancing the resident’s skills in direct patient care, patient care service development, and pharmacy management.
• This advanced training opportunity allows the resident to work alongside cutting-edge pharmacy preceptors and practitioners in the community pharmacy and ambulatory care settings.

Why complete a community residency?

• To develop patient care services and improve patient care skills including immunizations, screenings, medication therapy management, advanced clinical services, disease state management, and health coaching.
