Wellstar MCG Health associated with the Medical College of Georgia (formerly known as AU Medical Center at Augusta University has added a 12-month ASHP-(candidate status -first resident in 2024) PGY2 Infectious Diseases Pharmacy Residency to our postgraduate pharmacy residency opportunities. The Wellstar MCG Health post-graduate experience provides comprehensive training in an integrated tertiary academic medical center including acute care, ambulatory care, long-term care, teaching, research, medication use policy and leadership that focuses on both antimicrobial stewardship and infectious disease direct patient care.
Program highlights:
Vast variety of general infectious diseases (bone and joint, infective endocarditis, etc.)
Immunocompromised services (bone marrow transplant & organ transplant)
Dedicated microbiology rotation
Longitudinal experience within a Ryan White outpatient clinic assisting patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)
Leadership opportunities in education and formulary management through Antimicrobial Stewardship Pharmacy & Therapeutics (P&T) Subcommittee
Teaching through UGA College ofPharmacy
The flexibility of the residency design allows residents to individualize the program to meet their specific needs and interests.
PGY2 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in specialized areas of practice. PGY2 residencies provide residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care or other advanced practice settings. Residents who successfully complete an accredited PGY2 Infectious Diseases pharmacy residency are prepared for advanced patient care, academic, or other specialized positions, along with board certification.
Our PGY1 residency has been ASHP-accredited since 1975 (originally under the facility name Medical College of Georgia Hospitals and Clinics and MCG Health, Inc.) and our pharmacy department offers PGY2 training in 6 different specialty areas. We have almost 50 years of residency graduates who are making a difference every day!
