Residency Showcase Program Listings

Staten Island University Hospital (SIUH) is currently offering a PGY-1 pharmacy residency program to build on Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and to contribute to the development of effective clinical pharmacists responsible for optimizing pharmacotherapy regimens for patients with a wide range of medical conditions. After successfully completing the program, residents will be eligible for board certification and for postgraduate year two (PGY-2) pharmacy residency training.

The PGY-1 pharmacy practice residency at SIUH is a 12-month structured training program that is accredited through American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). The program consists of core and elective learning experiences delivered longitudinally and in two- to five-week rotation blocks, which are tailored to each individual resident’s needs and interests. The resident will rotate through inpatient and ambulatory care patient experiences to foster their growth as a clinician and to expand their clinical knowledge. In addition to training in direct patient care areas, the resident will have the opportunity to develop leadership skills by working closely with the administrative directors of pharmacy.

The residency program provides residents with the unique opportunity to precept, mentor and educate pharmacy students throughout their educational careers. Residents will have the opportunity to receive a teaching certificate through Long Island University, which includes formal lectures, a teaching portfolio and involvement in student labs and recitations.

Residents will be responsible for the design and implementation of a research project throughout the year. Each resident will be assigned a research mentor to work closely with to ensure the project is a success. It is anticipated the outcome of the research project will be presented at a professional meeting by the end of the residency year.

The SIUH pharmacy residency program uses the Pharmacy Online Residency Centralized Application Services (PhORCAS) for application submission. The following documents are required to be submitted through PhORCAS as part of our application packet:

• Curriculum vitae
• Letter of intent
• Official copy of a college transcript from a college of pharmacy
• Three letters of recommendation

All candidates must:

• Have obtained a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE)-accredited pharmacy program
• Be a New York state-licensed pharmacist or eligible for licensure in New York state
• Be of good moral character
• Be at least 21 years of age
• Be a U.S. citizen or alien lawfully admitted for permanent residence in the U.S. (alien registration card /USCIS I-551 status - "green card")
