Program Overview

The HCA Florida Northside Hospital PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program is a 12-month residency program that builds upon the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program. The aim of the program is to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for the medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, and to produce confident, self-directed learners who are eligible for board certification and postgraduate year two pharmacy residency training.

Our experienced HCA Florida Northside Hospital pharmacists are part of a collaborative care team. 

Pharmacy services include:

• Antimicrobial stewardship
• Pharmacokinetics
• Anticoagulation dosing and monitoring
• Total parenteral nutrition support
• Multi-disciplinary team rounds

We leverage technologies such as:

• Smart infusion pumps
• Expansive use of automated dispensing
• Bedside barcode scanning
• Clinical pharmacy workflow systems
• CPOE/eMAR to promote safe medication practices

Pharmacy residents at HCA Florida Northside Hospital will complete both core and elective rotations to develop their clinical skill set and tailor the program to their areas of interest.

• Infectious Disease I 
• Internal Medicine I 
• Internal Medicine II 
• Pharmacy Administration (longitudinal)
• Pharmacy Staffing (longitudinal)
• Pharmacy Teaching (longitudinal)
• Pharmacy Research (longitudinal)

Elective rotations include the following:

• Emergency Medicine II
• Infectious Disease II
• Trauma Intensive Care (HCA Florida Blake Hospital)
• Transplant (HCA Florida Largo Hospital)
• Neonatal Intensive Care (HCA Florida Oak Hill Hospital or HCA Florida Brandon Hospital)
• Burn Intensive care (HCA Florida Blake Hospital)
• Behavioral Health (HCA Florida Largo Hospital)

Application Requirements

• Graduate or candidate for graduation from an Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) accredited doctor of pharmacy program
• Licensed or eligible to apply for a license to practice pharmacy in the state of Florida. Residents must be licensed in the state of Florida within 120 days from the start of the residency.
• Participate in the ASHP Residency Matching Program
• Completed application submitted to PhORCAS prior to January 3, and include:
  • Letter of intent
  • Copy of pharmacy school transcript
  • Three professional references/evaluations submitted via PhORCAS
