The Marshfield Medical Center PGY1 pharmacy residency program builds on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.
Acute Care track: Inpatient Hospital Pharmacy training at hospital pharmacy
Drug Information (4 weeks)
Patient Care/Internal Medicine (8 weeks)
Acute Internal Medicine (4 weeks)
Ambulatory Internal Medicine (4 weeks)
Elective Rotations (4 weeks)**
The resident has the opportunity to pick from the following elective rotations. Residents must select at least 5 Direct Patient care Electives and can choose 0-4 weeks of a non-direct patient care elective:
Ambulatory care track electives: Cardiology, COPD, Dermatology (2 weeks), Diabetes Care Management, Pediatrics, Specialty Pharmacy
Acute care track electives: Critical Care (MICU), Emergency Medicine, Neonatal Intensive Care (NICU), Pediatrics, Pediatric Intensive Care (PICU), Surgical Intensive Care (SICU)
Oncology/Hematology (acute and/or ambulatory)
Infectious Disease (Combination of acute and ambulatory)
Non-direct patient care electives: Medication Use Safety, Leadership (2-4 weeks)
Acute track residents may complete 0-1 ambulatory care track electives. Ambulatory track residents may complete 0-1 acute track electives.
Required Longitudinal Experiences
Staffing (Service) Longitudinal (10 months)
Ambulatory Track- 8 hour shift/day: Outpatient pharmacy every 3-4th weekend Saturdays and Sundays (14 weekends total)
Acute Track- 8 hour shift/day: MMC Hospital Pharmacy every 3-4th weekend Saturdays and Sundays (14 weekends total)
10 weekdays throughout the year (Clinical Pharmacy Services/MMC Pharmacy)
All residents will staff 1 Holiday weekend (3 days)
Ad hoc staffing as needed (max of 40 hours per academic year)

One additional leadership reading of resident’s choice (e.g., ‘Good to Great’ by Jim Collins, ‘Hardwiring Excellence’ by Quint Studer) which will occur during Q4 of residency.
Topic Discussions with preceptors and program director will occur throughout the residency year as scheduled (10 minimum). These discussions may include, but are not limited to:
Weekly Meetings with Program Director
Medication Use Safety Longitudinal (12 months)
Patient Safety Committee x 12 months
Safety/Practice Management longitudinal project
Presentation/ACPE/CPD Longitudinal (12 months)
Participation in Community Outreach at assisted living facility (at least once per 12 month residency as scheduled) to address questions the elderly population may have regarding medication therapy and conduct a 20 minute presentation on a Geriatric related topic.
Volunteer opportunities at St. Vincent’s Free Clinic (optional)
Continuing Pharmacy Education (CPE) involvement x 12 months
Attend Pharmacy CE presentations and may present as part of current rotation requirements
Community Involvement will include, but is not limited to:
Research Longitudinal (12 months)
Participate in the Resident Research Program (including completion of the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) program)
Attend at least 2 Institutional Review Board (IRB) meetings
Prepare Poster Presentation and present at National meeting (e.g., ASHP Midyear)
