Medication-Use Safety and Policy Residency Program

Program Director: Luanne Sojka, PharmD, BCPS

The establishment of a one-year Medication-Use Safety and Policy residency position with the Marshfield Clinic Health System encompasses all aspects of the medication-use system. Training will include assessment of safe and effective medication-use systems and policies, data collection and analysis, designing safe and effective systems/policies, drug shortages, technology, research, leadership and management, and teaching, education, and dissemination of knowledge.

The Medication-Use Safety and Policy residency will be designed to equip the resident with the necessary tools and experiences to function as a pharmacy leader upon completion of the program. The resident will have a variety of project opportunities that will be tailored to a combination of the resident's interests and current needs of the Division of Pharmacy and the Institute of Quality, Innovation, and Patient Safety (IQIPS). The resident will also have responsibilities which are consistent with guidelines from ASHP. The goals, project opportunities and resident responsibilities are outlined below.

Program Purpose Statement:

PGY2 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in specialized areas of practice. PGY2 residencies provide residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care or other advanced practice settings.  Residents who successfully complete an accredited PGY2 pharmacy residency are prepared for advanced patient care, academic or other specialized positions, along with board certification, if available.

Program Structure:

The program consists of a series of educational rotations and a number of longitudinal experiences. The PGY2 Pharmacy Residency Program Curriculum has been developed with the goal of fulfilling the required purpose listed above.

• Orientation/Training (2 weeks)
• Drug Information (6 weeks)
• Internal Medicine (6 weeks)
• Technology and Automation (4 weeks)
• Data and Data Management (4 weeks)

Longitudinal Experiences

• Medication-Use System Safety Leadership (6 months)
• Medication-Use Safety Research (12 months)
• Presentations/ACPE/CPE (12 months)
• Staffing and Committees (12 months)
• Pharmacy Quality and Safety Policy (10 months)
• Drug Shortages (10 months)
• Event Investigation and Root Cause Analysis (12 months)

Residents will regularly attend meetings (in and outside the Division of Pharmacy) and complete assigned projects under the guidance of preceptors. Successful residents will become medication-use safety leaders and pioneers in this Pharmacy Practice specialty.
