Residency Showcase Program Listings

As a resident in the Postgraduate Year-1 (PGY1) Managed Care Pharmacy Residency at ForHealth Consulting at UMass Chan Medical School ~ Clinical Pharmacy Services, you will work to provide optimal patient care as you collaborate with various Medicaid agencies and nonprofit managed care organizations. Our program is a remote program, with optional on-site requirements. This Managed Care Pharmacy Residency is accredited by the ASHP in partnership with the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy (AMCP) — the first in New England to earn this distinction. 

The resident will complete a series of core & longitudinal rotations along with other leadership activities designed to develop independent and well-rounded managed care pharmacist clinicians. The resident will work with multiple program leaders and clinical pharmacists in order to gain a thorough understanding of clinical medication management, patient care activities, as well as formulary management & cost-containment strategies.

Resident-led activities include preparing and presenting monographs for medication/class reviews and quality assurance analyses, developing and updating clinical guidelines for implementation in a high-volume call center, participating in the planning and implementation of innovative clinical initiatives, participating in multidisciplinary outreach programs for plan members, pipeline monitoring and budget impact forecasting, coordinating project management activities for designated leadership roles (e.g., pipeline tracking and/or continuing education programming for drug information and formulary management considerations), presenting to various Medicaid P&T Committee and DUR Boards, health care provider audit reporting, participating in manufacturer direct negotiation & value-based contract discussions with manufacturers, responding to clinical consults and comprehensive medication reviews for medically-complex children and adolescents, counseling patients on home visits, conducting a longitudinal research project, and precepting pharmacy students on APPE clinical rotations. Involvement with various Medicaid plans allows for broad-based health plan experience. Direct and indirect patient care experiences in multiple arenas (in-person and virtual) are a focus of the program.  

Affiliation with the TH Chan School of Medicine, the Tan Chingfen Graduate School of Nursing, MCPHS University, Northeastern University, Western New England University, University of Connecticut, University of Rhode Island, and other schools of pharmacy will afford the resident teaching and precepting opportunities. Active participation in a longitudinal Pharmacy Teaching and Learning Seminar culminates in a Teaching Certificate of Completion. 

Residents function as active members of our operational and clinical teams. As an essential part of the organization, you have specific responsibilities:

• Formulary management through preparation and presentation of evidence-based clinical recommendations
• Problem-solving through personal clinical judgment and in collaborative team discussions
• Quality assurance analyses to monitor trends and potential impact on clinical and economic outcomes
• Business management, including budgetary considerations, monitoring, and projections, as well as program marketing
• Participate in day-to-day clinical activities, and the development of new initiatives
• Conduct a longitudinal clinical research project focused on patient care
• Enhancement of business and health care communication skills
• In-house patient care with a multidisciplinary health care team
• Engage in didactic teaching and APPE precepting activities, and participate in a formal Teaching & Learning Seminar
• Maintenance of our drug information resources through CPS Insider CE programming and Pipeline Tracking/Budget Impact Forecasting initiatives, which provide market intelligence to keep our staff and clients informed of upcoming drugs and delivery systems in development, and specifically the impact they may have on their health plans and budgets

(1) Completed candidate application including a current pharmacy license or planned receipt of (or anticipated completion of) a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from a college accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education by May 30 prior to the start of the program year and official college/university transcripts for pharmacy education;

(2) Three references or letters of recommendation; and

(3) Candidates invited for a virtual interview are required to deliver a brief, professional presentation.
