The Critical Care Pharmacy Residency Program at Geisinger Medical Center prepares you for the exciting practice of critical care pharmacy. Our residency offers a dynamic and innovative experience for pharmacists who aim to become exceptionally skilled critical care clinicians. In addition to robust, diversified experiences in bedside critical care, you’ll have opportunities to cultivate teaching and leadership skills.
As a pharmacy resident at our academic medical center, you will train in specialized intensive care units including a cardiothoracic/vascular unit, trauma unit, neonatal intensive care unit, multiple medical intensive care units, neuroscience unit, pediatric intensive care unit and surgical unit. We are a Level I Trauma Center and Comprehensive Stroke Center. You’ll learn to respond to adult code and stroke alerts as well as additional emergency bedside responses. You’ll also to train in the dynamic environment of our emergency department.

At our state-of-the-art simulation center, you will foster skills collaboratively with medical fellows and residents. Our electronic ICU platform allows us to provide critical care services to Geisinger hospitals throughout the state. We’re pleased to host learners from more than 15 schools of pharmacy, five pharmacy residency programs, Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine, Bloomsburg University School of Nursing and numerous medical residency and fellowship programs.
As a Geisinger Critical Care Pharmacy resident, you’ll train with a diverse multidisciplinary team. Our pharmacists are board certified in critical care, cardiology, pharmacotherapy, infectious diseases, pediatrics, nutrition support, oncology and more. Our physicians are board certified in critical care medicine from fields including internal medicine, pulmonary, general surgery, trauma surgery, anesthesia, neurology and emergency medicine. You’ll learn from them as well as a team of highly skilled critical care nurses and respiratory therapists in a truly collaborative, interprofessional approach to critical care.

Graduation Requirements
Possession of a valid pharmacist license from the Pennsylvania State Board of Pharmacy.
Completion of all PGY2 critical care pharmacy R1 goals and objectives with a status of achieved for residency and completion of remaining objectives for the program with at least >75% of objectives having a status of achieved for residency. All objectives must have a minimum of satisfactory progress by the end of the residency.
Presentation of a medication use evaluation project at the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Midyear Clinical Meeting and research project at the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) Congress or similar regional conference.
Completion of a major research project, including manuscript, and submission of the manuscript to the residency program director.
Continuing medical education presentation at a Geisinger annual interprofessional pharmacy conference.
Completion of institutional credentialing programs for anticoagulation, pharmacokinetics and adult code and stroke response.
Completion of staffing requirements; every third weekend in the intensive care unit.
Completion of the deliverables for clinical and longitudinal learning experiences including patient case presentations, journal clubs, topic discussions, order set reviews, guideline reviews, medication safety event reports, root causes analyses, or continuing medical education presentations as appropriate based on the resident’s individual customized development plan.
Completion of the residency appendix document with attainment of the requisite in person experiential and didactic experiences as outlined by the ASHP Competency Areas, Goals and Objectives for PGY2 Critical Care Pharmacy Residency Programs.

The Pharmacy Residencies at Geisinger Medical Center offer customized residency education to successfully prepare clinical pharmacists to care for patients, innovate, lead, and improve the quality of care as well as the patient experience. Our program is designed to build on doctor of pharmacy education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, who are eligible for board certification, and who are eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.
