Program Overview:
This PGY2 Pain Management and Palliative Care Pharmacy program is designed to provide advanced training in clinical pharmacy practice focusing on patient care and education in pain management in a variety of settings and palliative care. The resident will become an integral part of our pharmacist-run outpatient Pain clinic and interdisciplinary groups such as the Opioid Safety Initiative committee and Palliative Care rounds. The resident will also have opportunities to precept pharmacy students from the University of California San Diego and the University of the Pacific. Following the completion of this program, residents will be prepared to assume the challenging but fulfilling role as a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in pain and palliative care.
Program Structure:
2 week Orientation at beginning of academic year.
10 rotation blocks which are 4 to 6 weeks in duration and consists of 20 to 24 business days. Variance in duration of rotation block is due to anticipated time away from residency training including but not limited to holidays, meeting attendance, personal time off and interviews.
Longitudinal Experiences run concurrently during the year in addition to the above described rotation blocks.
Longitudinal staffing is not required, but learning experiences that include a required staffing component are indicated with an asterisk below.
Previous PGY1 rotation experiences will help guide duration and order of rotations.
Project Time of ½ day per week is built into rotation schedule and should be requested by resident if not evident.

Special Features: Local, regional, and national exposure and activities involving a special population with Veterans.
Facilities: The resident office will be located at the VA Medical Center in La Jolla, California and most activities will be coordinated from this site.
Participation in the ASHP Resident Matching Program
United States citizenship with proof of naturalization if naturalized
Possess a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an accredited School or College of Pharmacy
Completion of or be in the process of completing an ASHP-accredited PGY1 residency
Eligible for licensure to practice as a pharmacist at VA San Diego within 120 days from the beginning of the residency program

Most have greater than 5 years of experience with serving as a preceptor to residents
Many are Board Certified as Pharmacotherapy Specialists (BCPS), Oncology Pharmacists (BCOP), Psychiatric Pharmacists (BCPP), Ambulatory Care Pharmacists (BCACP), Critical Care Pharmacists (BCCCP), Infectious Diseases Pharmacists (BCIDP) and Geriatric Pharmacists (BCGP)
