The Ascension St. John Hospital Department of Pharmacy has been providing training to pharmacy residents since 1991. Ascension St. John Hospital is a 772-bed community teaching hospital and Level 1 trauma center located on the east side of Detroit bordering Grosse Pointe, offering a unique blend of urban and suburban experiences. As a Catholic health ministry, we strive to integrate excellence in clinical care with spiritually-centered, holistic care. Ascension St. John Hospital St. John Children’s Center, located on the Ascension St. John Hospital campus, provides comprehensive care for neonatal and pediatric patients.
Our ASHP-accredited residency program prepares pharmacists to optimize patient outcomes through drug therapy in both general and specialized clinical practice settings. Our program produces well-rounded practitioners with the knowledge and leadership skills necessary to advance the practice of pharmacy.
Clinical Practice
Pharmacists at Ascension St. John Hospital are well respected members of the health care team who provide care in the following areas:
Anticoagulation
Pharmacokinetics
Multidisciplinary rounding
Cardiac arrest response
Protocol-driven initiatives (renal adjustment, IV to PO, therapeutic interchange)
Outpatient chronic disease management (with collaborative practice agreement)
As a pharmacy resident in our program, you will have the opportunity to take twelve month-long rotations with longitudinal experiences, and participate in our decentralized model during weekend responsibilities. Progressive use of technology empowers the pharmacist to maximize their role as providers of pharmaceutical care.
We have recently begun a joint venture with Henry Ford Health. Our new website is scheduled to be activated on December 11th. Our name will also be changing to Henry Ford St. John.
The pharmacy residency program includes required rotations. The majority of rotations are a month in duration. Exceptions are noted below.
Residents are encouraged to attend presentations, conferences and lectures presented by the hospital medical staff. In addition to hospital-based presentations, the pharmacy department holds journal club, journal watch, case presentations, and continuing education activities.
The resident research project will be presented at the Ohio Pharmacy Residency Conference (OPRC) and Ascension Pharmacy Virtual Residency Conference, which are held each spring. The residents will also attend the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting and participate in a poster presentation.
