Northwest Medical Center (NMC) is a 300-bed community teaching hospital located in Tucson, Arizona.  It is owned by Community Health Systems (CHS), a for-profit healthcare company based in Franklin, Tennessee.  NMC is committed to delivering high quality, accessible healthcare to Tucson and the surrounding communities from primary care to highly specialized cardiac care and surgical services. The dedicated staff of physicians represent numerous specialties including cardiology, pulmonology, nephrology, endocrinology, neurology and neurosurgery, obstetrics and gynecology, orthopedics and surgery.  It is a teaching hospital as it started training internal medicine residents in 2023,  transitional year residents in 2024 and family practice residents in 2025. Student nurses are also trained through the Jersey School of Nursing on campus.  NMC is accredited by the Joint Commission, and has distinguished itself in accredited chest pain and heart failure programs, neurology and neurosurgery, outpatient imaging, a nationally accredited surgical weight loss program, total joint program, spine program and stroke center (distinguished by Joint Commission with Gold Seal designations), robotic surgery, GI lab, a free-standing women’s center, and women’s imaging center of excellence (including 3D mammography). NMC is one of only twenty-four hospitals nationwide to be recognized as an Antimicrobial Stewardship Center of Excellence by the Infectious Diseases Society of America for 2020-2022.  It also provides advanced emergency medicine services as well as intensive care services for pulmonary, medical, surgical, and cardiothoracic surgery.

The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program at Northwest Medical Center is a 12-month program accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) starting at the end of June or July 1st. The program was established in 2012 and has a good relationship with the University Of Arizona College Of Pharmacy including student precepting, a Teaching Certificate Program and an elective off-site rotation in toxicology. A pharmacist completing the PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program will be well-prepared to provide direct patient care services in an acute care facility, pursue advanced training in a PGY2 residency or fellowship, and be prepared for board certification.
