Program Information:
The Mercy Hospital Springfield PGY-2 Residency in Ambulatory Care strives to empower pharmacists with the tools and experiences to develop the clinical, practice management and precepting skills to be a successful ambulatory care pharmacy clinician in a variety of practice settings. Completing an Ambulatory Care Residency at a large Community Health System allows the resident to develop practice management and service expansion skills in addition to building on clinical skills developed during a PGY-1 program. Mercy’s partnerships with multiple healthcare education programs, including schools of pharmacy, provide elective opportunities for residents to explore academia interests.
The residency program includes two required extended learning experience blocks lasting approximately 10 calendar weeks with the equivalent of one day each week set aside for longitudinal work (Foundations and Medically Underserved Clinic). In addition to the required blocks, the resident will select one administrative (academia, clinical management, or precepting) and two clinical elective learning experiences, usually scheduled as 8-week blocks, with the equivalent of one day each week set aside for longitudinal work. Successful completion of at least one required block is a prerequisite for progression to any elective experiences. Elective selection is based on resident interest and preceptor availability with the opportunity to develop new elective experiences where resources allow. Electives with existing Learning Experience Descriptions include academia, behavioral health, cardiology, endocrinology, family medicine, infectious disease, internal medicine, population health, and rural health. Any required block or longitudinal experience can be repeated as a block elective if desired.
In addition to extended block experiences, there are four required 52-week longitudinal experiences- Leadership & Business Plan Development, Population Health, Teaching and Learning, and Research.
Residents are required to complete a Clinical Research Project and Business Plan Proposal. Project selection is based on resident interest and institution needs. Other requirements include two research presentations, three formal and three informal presentations, and precepting PGY1 residents and pharmacy students.
The Mercy Hospital Springfield PGY-2 Ambulatory Care Residency was established in 2021 and received full ASHP Accreditation status in 2022.
