Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center’s Pharmacy Residency Program is committed to developing confident, competent and compassionate pharmacists with strong clinical and communication skills to care for our patients and educate future generations of healthcare professionals.  PGY1 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.

Our goals for our residents are excellence in clinical practice and teaching, readiness for additional post-graduate training and eligibility for board certification. At our institution, residents will gain a wealth of hands on experience in acute care pharmacy practice ranging from emergency medicine and intensive care to various inpatient clinical specialties. In addition, our program is affiliated with both the Keck Graduate Institute School of Pharmacy and Western University of Health Sciences’ College of Pharmacy, providing residents with a plethora of educational resources as well as valuable teaching experiences.

Compensation

Salary …. Approximately $60,000 (PGY1) and $65,000 (PGY2)

Credit Union

Health Care Spending Account Option

Features of the PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program:

The residency is structured in rotations across a variety of clinical and administrative areas and includes both block and longitudinal rotations.  The required rotations provide a breadth of experiences throughout the inpatient hospital setting.  The elective rotations will provide the resident opportunities to individualize the residency based on their areas of interest.  Required rotations may be repeated during elective blocks if the residents chooses.  Length of elective rotations can be structured based on the resident's level of interest. 

Upon satisfactory completion of the one-year residency, the participant will receive a Certificate of Completion of a Residency issued by Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center.  The certification of completion requires:

• Completion of a full-time practice commitment for 12 months.

• Successfully passing the California State Board of Pharmacy pharmacist examination.

• Residents must "achieve" all patient care (R1) objectives, "achieve" at least 85% of all other objectives and have no more than 1 objective in the other competency areas as "needs improvement".

• Completion of the Teaching Certificate program at Western University of Health Sciences, College of Pharmacy

• Completion of the Checklist for Completion of Residency Requirements

• Completion of a major project and preparation of a podium presentation suitable for the Western States Conference

• Completion of a 1 hour Grand Rounds lecture at PVHMC.

• Participation in resident recruitment showcases and selection of the following year's residents.

Features of the PGY2 Critical Care Pharmacy Residency Program:

PGY-2 residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and PGY-1 pharmacy residency training to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives for advanced practice areas. Residents who successfully complete PGY-2 residency programs are prepared for advanced patient care or other specialized positions, and board certification in the advanced practice area, if available.

The PGY-2 Critical Care Pharmacy Residency Program at PVHMC is committed and dedicated to training residents. The residency program is designed to provide residents with core learning experiences necessary for establishing a foundation in critical care knowledge and the skills to become practice-ready critical care pharmacists, eligible for board certification.

Upon satisfactory completion of the one-year residency, the participant will receive a Certificate of Completion of a Residency issued by Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center.  The certification of completion requires:

• Successful completion of all learning experience objectives

• Completion of a full-time practice commitment for 12 months

• Achievement in all required goals and objectives:

  • > 90 % of patient care related goals and objectives

  • > 85% of non-patient care goals and objectives

• Completion of staffing component

• Completion of required presentations: 3 journal clubs, 3 case presentations/clinical forums, 2 grand rounds

• Completion of Critical Care Appendix

• Completion of residency research project with presentation at a pharmacy conference and written manuscript appropriate for publication

• Submission of a manuscript for publication (not required to be accepted for publication)

• Participation in resident recruitment activities

Applying for a residency is a highly competitive process with a few spots available per academic year, therefore we encourage early applications. PVHMC participates in PhORCAS - Pharmacy Online Residency Centralized Application Service.  All applicants must use PhORCAS to submit an application at https://portal.phorcas.org.  Please refer to the checklist below for the application process.  PVHMC also participates in the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Resident Matching Program administered by National Matching Services Inc.  Applicants must register for the Match before the applicants will be sent to PVHMC.  Please submit the following items by January 2nd to complete the application process:

• Letter of intent
