Medstar Washington Hospital Center is a large quaternary care site, Level 1 Trauma Center with a nationally recognized burn center, heart and vascular institute, and comprehensive stroke center located in the nation's capital. We offer a diverse critical care experience in areas such as trauma, burn, cardiovascular surgery, and heart transplant.
Residents will complete critical care research, provide inservices to medical and surgical residents, participate in journal clubs, develop continuing education for pharmacists, and present at Grand Rounds or similar platforms. They will lead quality improvement or practice initiatives to expand or enhance critical care pharmacy services. Other opportunities include participation in Code Blue, Sepsis Response, mass casualty and emergency preparedness training, and interdisciplinary committees at the site and system level.
This program is an ASHP Pre-candidate program.
Staffing Requirements:
- Evening emergency department staffing AND
- Clinical critical care satellite coverage every 3 weeks

The Medstar Washington Hospital Center PGY2 Critical Care Pharmacy Residency Program is designed to develop pharmacists into competent, assertive clinicians capable of providing evidence-based patient centered care to a diverse population of critically ill patients. Graduates of the program will develop a comprehensive understanding of critical care pharmacotherapy and will demonstrate the ability to identify, prevent, and resolve medication-related problems. They will be effective educators across various healthcare disciplines and will function as integral members of multidisciplinary teams. Additionally, residents will exhibit a high level of professional maturity, integrity, and accountability, while also demonstrating leadership and practice management skills essential for advancing patient care.
Application Process:
Individuals interested in applying should apply via the Pharmacy Online Residency Centralized Application System (PhORCAS) www.ashp.org/phorcas by January 2nd. Qualified applicants will be invited for an interview. Candidates are selected based on professional competence, scholastic achievement, leadership potential, communication skills, interpersonal skills and comprehension of current standards of pharmacy practice. Candidates are matched via the ASHP Resident Matching Program.
Applicant Requirements:
All candidates must meet the following criteria:
Possess a PharmD from an ACPE accredited college of pharmacy
Be eligible to apply for a license to practice pharmacy in the District of Columbia
Participate in the ASHP PGY2 Residency Matching Program
Eligible to work in the United States
Current enrollment in or certificate of completion from an ASHP Accredited PGY1 Pharmacy Residency program
3 Letters of Recommendation from clinical preceptors or pharmacy leaders
