Welcome to the 12-month PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program at AdventHealth Apopka, formerly known as Florida Hospital.
AdventHealth Apopka is a 158-bed acute care hospital that opened in early 2018 which will grow into a 200-bed hospital. It is located just outside of the Orlando area and provides a work environment with a family-feel. Services include emergency, critical care, radiology, sports medicine, general surgery and cardiology. At AdventHealth Apopka, our mission is to extend the healing ministry of Christ to our community by providing the most advanced care in the area within a compassionate, caring environment that puts our patients and families first. AdventHealth Central Florida ranked No. 1 in the Orlando metro area among U.S. News’ 2024-2025 edition of Best Hospitals. It is the 14th consecutive year the hospital has topped the rankings in greater Orlando. Affiliated with seven other acute care programs throughout Central Florida and twenty-four through the state of Florida, AdventHealth Central Florida is one of the largest Medicare providers in the United States. The PGY1 pharmacy residency program at Apopka was established in 2020. Our inaugural class graduated in June 2021. However, the residency program in Orlando was started in 1999. At Apopka, we have the best of both worlds, with strong divisional support and a nurturing small community hospital feel!
PGY1 Purpose: PGY1 residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives. Pharmacists who successfully complete a PGY1 residency program will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership, and education. They will be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e., BCPS), and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies.
The residency program expands both clinical and staffing services at our facility and augments the excellent pharmacy staff we currently have. Residents will participate in a decentralized pharmacy model and work with multidisciplinary teams, monitoring responses to drug therapy and optimizing care to improve patient outcomes. Residents who complete the residency program will develop the critical thinking skills necessary to provide patient-focused care and become confident, independent clinicians as part of the health care team.
