Required rotations include departmental orientation, internal medicine 1, medical intensive care, emergency medicine, infectious diseases, adult medicine II (internal medicine 2 or ambulatory care), critical care II (surgical or burn intensive care), and special populations (adult burn or acute inpatient psychiatry). In addition, the resident will participate in several longitudinal experiences including information management, pharmacy systems, and practice management. The resident will experience drug distribution and pharmacy operations through weekend staffing assignments in the central pharmacy. The resident will have the opportunity to select additional elective experiences including pediatrics, advanced internal medicine, advanced emergency medicine, advanced medical intensive care, and HIV. Additional rotations are considered on a case-by-case basis.
Each resident is expected to complete a longitudinal research project under the guidance of a project preceptor. Results are presented at a regional conference.
Valleywise Health is a clerkship site for Doctor of Pharmacy Candidates from the University of Arizona College of Pharmacy, Midwestern University College of Pharmacy-Glendale, Creighton University School of Pharmacy, and other accredited institutions. The resident may serve as a clinical co-preceptor for pharmacy students. The resident will provide in-service education to pharmacists, nurses, physicians, allied health professionals, students, and patients as assigned. The resident will work on additional educational projects such as case presentations, drug information responses, journal club presentations, and a seminar/CE presentation. The resident may be assigned to serve as preceptor for various University of Arizona College of Pharmacy courses/activities.
The resident will participate in Pharmacy and Therapeutics committee through monthly attendance and the presentation of assigned projects (such as a Medication Utilization Evaluation). Residents gain additional exposure to multidisciplinary committees through participation in Nursing-Pharmacy Collaborative. Residents may elect to participate in the LGBTQIA+ Employee Resource Group to engage in diversity, equity, and inclusivity for patients and staff.
There are two resident positions available for the 2026-2027 program year. Candidates must be a graduate of an ACPE accredited school of pharmacy and can apply through the Pharmacy Online Residency Centralized Application Service (PhORCAS). Valleywise Health is the Phoenix area’s only public teaching hospital, providing services to over 70,000 culturally diverse members of Maricopa County, including a largely Spanish-speaking population. All employees of Valleywise Health are provided with annual cultural competence training to effectively serve the population. Within the health system, the Department of Pharmacy provides services to a 233-bed full-service teaching hospital (Valleywise Health Medical Center), 289 acute care psychiatric beds (Valleywise Health Behavioral Health Centers in Mesa, Phoenix, and Maryvale), and twelve outpatient clinics. The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency offered by Valleywise Health is focused on acute care training at Valleywise Health Medical Center.
